Brentford
The first ten games of the Premier League season have been pretty mixed for Brentford with the stronger results being earned at the Gtech Community Stadium. Overall the board have to be pleased with the way things have been under Keith Andrews and Brentford have shown they have more than enough quality to survive in the Premier League even after the big changes made in the summer.
Despite the defeat at Crystal Palace last weekend, Brentford are 12th in the Premier League table and they have 13 points on the board. The manager will want the players to remain focused and maintain a healthy buffer to the relegation zone and Brentford have a solid 3-1-1 record at home in the top flight this season.
Brentford had won 3 in a row in all competitions before the 2-0 loss at Selhurst Park, but they return home on Sunday. The fixture list has been far from kind at home this season with Brentford having already hosted four of last season's top six (with another to come this weekend) and yet The Bees have beaten Aston Villa, Manchester United and Liverpool here with the last of those wins being the last fixture played at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Benjamin Arthur is expected to be part of the squad this weekend as Keith Andrews has most of his options available.
Newcastle United
Eddie Howe has not really been under any media scrutiny for the inconsistent performances produced by Newcastle United this season, but the manager will be well aware that there is plenty of room for improvement. As poor as they were last Sunday at the London Stadium, Newcastle United bounced back with a strong home performance in the Champions League and that gives them some momentum.
The defeat last weekend has left Newcastle United in 13th place in the Premier League table, although it is tightly bunched up above them and a couple of consecutive wins would really improve the position. They have had a real problem performing away from home and Newcastle United make the long journey down to West London with a 0-3-2 record in the top flight, while scoring just twice in those fixtures.
Newcastle United have won 7 of their last 10 games in all competitions, but the exceptions have all been defeats. The real inconsistency has been in the Premier League and Newcastle United have lost 3 of their last 5 games in the Division. Newcastle United have now won 1 of their last 9 away games in all competitions and they have lost consecutive away Premier League fixtures at Brighton and West Ham United.
William Osula and Anthony Gordon are real doubts for this fixture. Both Tino Livramento and Yoane Wissa are hoping to return after the November international break with the former further along than the summer signing.
Head to Head
These teams met three times last season- both Premier League games ended in home wins and Newcastle United beat Brentford at St James' Park in the League Cup Quarter Final.
Newcastle United had won all 3 Premier League games played at the Gtech Community Stadium before being beaten 4-2 eleven months ago.
Prediction
Another solid Champions League outing has seen Newcastle United push towards the Knock Out Rounds of that competition, but Eddie Howe must still be wondering how his team performed as poorly as they did in East London last Sunday.
Travelling to the other side of London ahead of the international break is an opportunity for Newcastle United to build on the win over Athletic Bilbao, but this is a team that have really had problems playing away from St James' Park for several months now.
Newcastle United have yet to win an away League game this season and that makes it 8 winless away Premier League games going back to last season.
A lack of goals has been a major problem with just two scored in 5 away League games this season, while Newcastle United's previous strong defensive numbers have also dipped. They begun the season with 3 away clean sheets in a row in the League, but Newcastle United have lost back to back away games at Brighton and West Ham United and conceded five times in those losses.
Previously they had a good record when visiting the Gtech Community Stadium, but Brentford thumped Newcastle United 4-2 here last season and Keith Andrews' team have been very good at home in this campaign.
Despite being handed an opening home fixture list of Aston Villa, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool, The Bees have made things very difficult for those teams and picked up 10 points from a possible 15. Even the defeat to Manchester City was a little unfortunate and this Brentford team will be well prepared to put Newcastle United under pressure and test the depth of the visiting squad.
Losing Anthony Gordon will be a blow and Newcastle United have perhaps lacked serious creativity in the final third.
This is going to make it tough for them to snap the winless away run in the top flight this Sunday and there is plenty of reason to like the Brentford prices at close to 3.00 to win this game.
They certainly look more likely and the Newcastle United price looks to be one based on reputation rather than recent performances.
It only seems to make sense to back Brentford with a start on the Asian Handicap in this fixture- the full payout will only be in a Brentford win, but there will be some return as long as they can avoid a defeat, which looks very possible.
