Everton

Team-mates arguing with one another on the football pitch is not that uncommon, but having a player sent off for hitting out against a team-mate is very rare. That happened to Everton on Monday Night Football, but David Moyes was able to put a 'positive' spin on the situation considering his team had just battled for a 0-1 win at Old Trafford.

The weekend ended as well as Everton fans could have hoped with the victory taking them up into 11th place and above rivals Liverpool in the latest Premier League table. They will be looking to keep the improving run going through another League fixture when hosting at the Hill Dickinson Stadium where Everton have a 3-2-1 record in the top flight.

Everton are unbeaten in 3 League games and they have won back to back fixtures against Fulham and Manchester United without conceding a goal. The Toffees have won 2 of the last 3 games at home in the Premier League and have sandwiched those victories around the 0-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Idrissa Gueye was the player sent off after his clash with Michael Keane and he may only be available for one of the next several Everton games considering he will soon be heading off to the African Cup of Nations. Seamus Coleman came off with an injury on Monday and is expected to miss out, as is Nathan Patterson.

Newcastle United

After beating Manchester City last Saturday and taking an early lead in Marseille in the Champions League, Eddie Howe would have been hoping his Newcastle United team were finally putting some consistency together. However, not for the first time this season, Newcastle United capitulated away from home and they were beaten 2-1 in that Champions League clash to set the team back.

The manager has to be very unhappy with the manner of the defeat in Marseille, but he will be looking to pick the players up and help them turn this poor away run of form around. The Magpies are 14th in the Premier League table, but as close to the top six as the bottom three in terms of points. However, it is Newcastle United's 0-3-3 away record that has really been letting them down this season in the top flight.

Newcastle United have not drawn any of the last 13 games played in all competitions and they have won 8 of those fixtures. Since beating Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League, Newcastle United have lost 4 away games in a row in all competitions and the last 3 after scoring the first goal.

Kieran Trippier is expected to miss out again, while both William Osula and Yoane Wissa continue to work hard to become available for selection.

Head to Head

Everton took four points from Newcastle United last season, but the majority were earned on the final day when winning at St James' Park.

They have lost 1 of the last 4 home games against Newcastle United after the game finished goalless at Goodison Park last season.

Prediction

Both of these teams beat clubs from Manchester in the last Premier League game played and that should mean there is some confidence in the Everton and Newcastle United camps.

However, Eddie Howe's men have since lost an away game in the Champions League and Newcastle United continue to have big problems in putting together full performances away from home.

Not only have they failed to win any of 6 away Premier League games this season, but that run has been extended to 9 League games having failed to win three more fixtures on their travels at the back end of last season.

The defeat in Marseille makes it 4 straight away losses in all competitions and the real disappointment that will be felt by Eddie Howe is the fact that Newcastle United have scored the first goal in the last 3 of those defeats. That includes leading at what was then a struggling West Ham United and doing the same at Brentford in the last couple of away Premier League games.

Eddie Howe has to be encouraged by some of the chances being created, but Newcastle United have looked vulnerable at the back and Everton will certainly feel they can exploit those issues having won 2 Premier League games in a row.

Both have been behind clean sheets, which will make David Moyes very happy, but Everton have also lacked some consistency in recent weeks. There have been moments when they have looked really good, but the struggles of the Number 9, whoever they pick, has been holding them back.

You have to expect Everton to create some chances, but Newcastle United will also feel they have the quality in the final third to do the same.

Last season the fixture at Goodison Park ended goalless, while the game at St James' Park ended 0-1 in favour of Everton.

However, both games had featured more attacking threat than the final scores will suggest, and this has been a fixture that has produced plenty of fireworks in the final third in recent seasons.

Newcastle United are not that far away from earning a positive away result, but Everton have been strong at their new home and so backing at least three goals to be shared out looks a decent approach to take at odds against.

Recent Newcastle United away games have tended to see plenty of goals with both teams hitting the back of the net, while Everton had played out 2 home fixtures in a row that ended with three goals shared out before the strong win over Fulham.

An early goal could spark this fixture and a 2-1 result either way would not be a major surprise.

The Pick :

Everton 1-2 Newcastle United
