Football: English Premier League
Saturday 13th December 2025 - Kick Off 3pm
Chelsea
The festive period saw Enzo Maresca's Chelsea suffer a couple of stumbles twelve months ago and there is a real fear amongst the fanbase that another difficult period is coming up. While the draw with Arsenal to end November would have been acceptable, December has opened up with a couple of Chelsea defeats that have slowed momentum and the manager and the fans will be expecting a big reaction on Saturday in the last home match before Christmas.
Some believed Chelsea could push their way into the title race, but they are now 5th in the Premier League table and 8 points behind leaders Arsenal after only earning a point at Bournemouth last Saturday. The Blues are back at Stamford Bridge this weekend where they have a 3-2-2 record in the top flight.
Chelsea have not won any of their last 4 games in all competitions, but the loss at Atalanta will have stung with 2 of the last 3 games ending in a defeat. The side had won 5 of the previous 6 games at Stamford Bridge in all competitions, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Arsenal, although Chelsea did play a huge amount of that fixture with ten men.
Moises Caicedo will complete a suspension and Liam Delap is set for another spell on the sidelines. Cole Palmer did not travel to Italy in the Champions League as he rebuilds full match fitness, while Wesley Fofana returns from the fixture in Bergamo having picked up a knock that leaves him doubtful.
Everton
Once again the momentum looks to be behind David Moyes' Everton team and the manager will be looking for a big end to the calendar year and then hope for reinforcements to be signed in the January transfer window. There is no doubt that an opportunity to return to European Football has been opened up by Everton and they will want to maintain that push through another tough away fixture.
The Toffees are not only 7th in the Premier League table, but the 24 points on the board means Everton are only a couple out of the Champions League places. Improving the 3-1-3 away record in the top flight will give Everton a chance to leapfrog Chelsea in the standings and would give David Moyes a real reason to go to the board and look for serious January investment.
Everton had been on a really poor run where they had been struggling to produce wins, but all of a sudden they have been victorious in 4 of the last 5 Premier League games played. Last weekend they crushed Nottingham Forest 3-0 at Hill Dickinson Stadium, while Everton are chasing a third away League win in succession having previously won at Old Trafford and the Vitality Stadium by the same 0-1 scoreline.
Idrissa Gueye and Timothy Iroegbunam are both available after serving suspension, but Seamus Coleman has been ruled out for several weeks. Thierno Barry is also a doubt.
Head to Head
Chelsea took four points from Everton in the Premier League last season and the majority were earned from a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
They have now won 2 in a row at home against Everton having previously been held to draws in consecutive fixtures against this opponent here.
Prediction
This feels like a really important fixture for Enzo Maresca and his Chelsea team after a difficult start to the month.
They have not played at home since the 1-1 draw with Arsenal, but a couple of losses has just slowed the momentum and there are some concerns that the manager is perhaps tinkering with his team selection and losing the rhythm that Chelsea had seemingly built up.
A title challenge was perhaps unlikely, but Chelsea will be expecting another top four finish and losing to a potential rival for those positions after a poor couple of weeks will hurt.
Enzo Maresca will have Cole Palmer available for this one, but his team will need to start off with much more intensity than they have in the last couple of Premier League games.
Breaking down Everton will not be easy and especially not when you consider David Moyes' team have won 4 of the last 5 Premier League games and all with clean sheets too. Despite the injuries at the back and some key players being suspended, Everton have really found some momentum to move up into 7th place and they will be looking to frustrate the hosts.
In recent years, Everton have made things tough for Chelsea and there are players in the final third that could hurt the home team if there is a lack of intensity being displayed.
However, it should do Chelsea the world of good being back at home where they have been in very good form in recent weeks.
The loss to Sunderland is a reminder of what can happen if Chelsea allow standards to slide, but they should have the attacking options needed to break down this Everton team. Manchester United and Newcastle United have created some very strong positions against Everton over the last three weeks and Chelsea can do the same with the quality that is available likely to find a couple of routes to goal in this important Premier League fixture.
