Leeds United v Newcastle United
Football: English Premier League

This game is live on TV

Leeds United

After scoring three minutes into the second half to take a 0-2 lead at Stamford Bridge, some Leeds United fans may have been dreaming of another trip to Wembley Stadium, albeit this time for a Cup Final. Daniel Farke looked shell-shocked as his team went on to capitulate 6-3 at Chelsea in the League Cup Third Round, but he will be looking for a big reaction from his Leeds United squad.

Being back at Elland Road will help the players who have been in strong form over a number of months since a tweak was made to the system being used by the manager. The League Cup run may be over prematurely, but Leeds United will take comfort from having picked up 5 points in the Premier League as they look to improve the 0-1-0 record at home.

Leeds United had only lost 1 of the previous 8 games in all competitions before falling apart on Wednesday, but it is a run that should mean confidence remains high inside the squad. The side fought back for a 1-1 draw with Brentford in the first game at Elland Road this season and Leeds United are unbeaten in 6 here in all competitions, while they have won 4 of those matches.

Ilia Gruev may be available, but Joe Rodon has been ruled out until after the next international break.

Newcastle United

Two seasons ago, the long wait for silverware at St James' Park was ended by Eddie Howe's team when they lifted the League Cup and so it is a competition that will be held in fondness by the supporters. A battling win at the New Den on Tuesday has helped Newcastle United into another Fourth Round in the League Cup and they can now focus on the Premier League through to the September international break.

The Magpies have made an unbeaten start to the season under the new manager Matthias Jaissle and the fans are going to be pleased with some of the entertainment they have already seen. Of course results do matter as well and Newcastle United will be hoping to turn some draws into wins having been held by Bournemouth last Saturday.

Newcastle United had been 0-2 behind to The Cherries before a late equaliser helped them remain unbeaten, while the win at Millwall does mean the side have won 3 of the last 4 since the 2-2 draw with Liverpool on the opening weekend. They had ended last season without a win in any of the last 5 away games in all competitions and Newcastle United had lost 4 of those, but they have won both fixtures on their travels under Matthias Jaissle and with clean sheets in each too.

Amar Dedic and Ewen Jaouen are both doubts for this fixture on Monday night. The likes of Dan Burn, Joelinton and William Osula are expected back in training during the upcoming international break.

Head to Head

Newcastle United scored twice in injury time to beat Leeds United 4-3 at St James' Park last season after sharing a goalless draw earlier in the season at Elland Road.

Leeds United have not won any of the last 3 when hosting Newcastle United, although the last 2 here have ended in draws.

Prediction

The latest Monday Night Football offering from the English Premier League comes from Yorkshire where Leeds United will be hosting Newcastle United in a battle of unbeaten opponents.

They have both been in League Cup action this past week with differing results, but Leeds United will note they had a much tougher visit to London compared with Newcastle United.

Daniel Farke's team have made a positive start to the League campaign, although they do have some work to do defensively if they are going to turn draws into wins. It was the poor defensive performance that also saw Leeds United capitulate at Stamford Bridge in the 6-3 League Cup Third Round defeat and Farke will know his team need to be better.

They are facing a Newcastle United team that have settled pretty quickly under Matthias Jaissle, but who have been outperforming the numbers. Last weekend they were 0-2 behind to Bournemouth, but halved the deficit almost immediately after the visitors scored the second and Newcastle United have perhaps been on the right side of a touch of fortune.

Much like the hosts, there is work to do in order to toughen Newcastle United up defensively, although both away fixtures played this season have ended up with wins and clean sheets. That will certainly give the players confidence as they look to soak up pressure and attack opponents with fast counters and Newcastle United will be dangerous.

So will Leeds United and this may be an entertaining watch for the fans tuning in for the last Premier League game of the weekend.

A first half goal may be needed to just open things up, but both teams are capable of hurting the other in the final third and this feels like a fixture that could end up 2-1 to either team with the right decisions made in attacking areas.
