Manchester United
Chances had come and gone and Manchester United were level at half time at Molineux last Monday, but it was no surprise that the extra attacking quality eventually told for Ruben Amorim's team. The manager will soon be losing key players to the African Cup of Nations and Manchester United are about to head into a more challenging part of the schedule as they look to maintain the push towards a return to European Football.
Once again Manchester United will be playing last this weekend, but they are going into this round of fixtures in 6th place in the Premier League table and just a point behind Crystal Palace in the top four. After beginning this season in fine form at Old Trafford, Manchester United now have a 4-1-2 record here with three of the next four Premier League fixtures to be played in front of the home fans.
Manchester United have only lost 1 of the last 9 Premier League games, but fans will feel points have been left on the table after recent results. The poorer ones have actually been at Old Trafford where Manchester United have lost 0-1 to Everton and drawn 1-1 with West Ham United in the last two outings at home.
Harry Maguire, Matthijs De Ligt and Benjamin Sesko are all pushing for returns. The hope is that Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo are able to play on Monday before departing for the African Cup of Nations.
Bournemouth
Andoni Iraola will have been glad that Bournemouth avoided another Premier League defeat last weekend, but an early goal was disallowed and they had to settle for a goalless draw with Chelsea. Recent results have seen Bournemouth slide down the Premier League table, but the focus is on finding a victory to try and turn the momentum around.
The Cherries have dropped down to 13th in the Premier League table, but they are only 6 points behind Crystal Palace in the top four and earning a place in Europe is a real ambition of the club. They have a 1-2-4 away record in the top flight where Bournemouth have scored 11 goals and conceded 19.
Bournemouth have not won any of the last 6 Premier League games and they have only earned 2 points in that time. They will make a long trip up to the North West having lost the last 3 away Premier League games played and Bournemouth have conceded at least three goals in the last 4 on their travels in the Division.
Tyler Adams is back from suspension, but Lewis Cook will miss out. Marcos Senesi is a doubt, while Ryan Christie is hoping to return just after Christmas Day.
Head to Head
Since returning to the top flight, Bournemouth are unbeaten in 4 Premier League games against Manchester United and they have earned four points in each of the last two campaigns.
In both, Bournemouth have won 0-3 at Old Trafford and those matches have both taken place in December.
Prediction
The final game of the Premier League game is to be played on a Monday and there will be some real complaints if Manchester United's African Cup of Nations representatives are not able to play.
FIFA have made a deal with nations from the continent that players can be held back until December 15th, which means the majority of the Premier League will have players available this weekend.
However, the broadcasters have chosen this game for Monday Night Football, which lands on December 15th, and so Manchester United are unsure if the likes of Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo will be available.
It is already a challenging game for Manchester United who have suffered consecutive 0-3 home defeats to Bournemouth and both of those taking place in the month of December. Andoni Iraola's men may not be in the greatest of recent form, but those results will give them confidence and more so when thinking Manchester United have not won either of the last 2 home Premier League games.
The problem for Bournemouth is that they have been incredibly vulnerable away from home all season and they have continued to concede far too many goals away from the Vitality Stadium. They have shown plenty of threat going the other way, but the losses have begun to add up in away fixtures because it is asking a lot to keep needing to score two, three or four goals to simply avoid defeat.
Manchester United are still hugely inconsistent under Ruben Amorim and there is a feeling that they are underachieving in what is a wide open Division and without having the burden of playing in European competition.
There have been some positive signs of progress, although Manchester United will always give teams a chance with the continued poor defending.
However, as long as the likes Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo are allowed to take part, Manchester United should have enough quality to find a way to edge to the three points and snap the poor recent record against this opponent. Matheus Cunha is getting closer to another goal, but the likes of Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount have shown their composure and Manchester United can secure an important three points before a couple of tough fixtures coming up.
