Everton
David Moyes will feel his Everton missed opportunities to put Chelsea under pressure last weekend and he will be hoping some of his key attacking players are available for this weekend. They will be needed if Everton are going to earn a positive result against the Premier League leaders in their bid to get back on track with their own European adventures.
Results last weekend contributed to Everton slipping to 9th in the Premier League table, although the 24 points on the board means only being 4 points behind the top four. The Toffees have a 4-2-2 record in their new Hill Dickinson Stadium home and Everton have scored 11 goals and conceded 9 in those games.
Everton had won 4 of 5 Premier League games before the 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge last Saturday. The side have interchanged wins and losses in the last 5 home Premier League games with wins over Crystal Palace, Fulham and Nottingham Forest, but defeats against Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.
Idrissa Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye are both playing at the African Cup of Nations. Both Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall are doubts.
Arsenal
Just when it looked like Arsenal were going to be dropping two very disappointing points against Wolves, another own goal helped them secure a vital three points and maintain the lead over Manchester City and Aston Villa. Declan Rice will have made it clear to the rest of the squad that standards cannot be allowed to slip, even as Arsenal are dealing with a number of defensive issues.
The Gunners remain top of the Premier League table with a 2 point lead over Manchester City and 3 point lead over Aston Villa, although Arsenal will kick off behind Manchester City if Pep Guardiola's team beat West Ham United earlier in the day. They will be travelling to Merseyside with a 4-2-2 record away from home where Arsenal have scored 10 goals and conceded 7.
Arsenal's long unbeaten record was ended by Aston Villa two weeks ago, but they have bounced back with back to back wins in all competitions. In recent weeks Arsenal have won Champions League games in Czechia and Belgium, but they have not won any of the last 3 away Premier League games.
Riccardo Calafiori is available after a suspension, but Ben White is the latest defender to suffer an injury that means he is set for a spell on the sidelines. Gabriel is hoping to return next weekend.
Head to Head
Both Premier League games between these clubs ended in draws last season.
Arsenal had lost 3 consecutive visits to Goodison Park before winning there in September 2023 and then drawing last season.
Prediction
A late goal might have been needed, but it was an important three points for Arsenal and they have some momentum back behind them following the loss at Villa Park.
The concern is that Arsenal have failed to win any of the last 3 away Premier League games and that has allowed Manchester City and Aston Villa to close on the leaders.
This looks to be another tough test for Mikel Arteta’s men, who are continuing to miss key defensive personnel, although they are perhaps facing Everton at a good time.
If both Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall are out with injuries, that will really feel like being the case.
David Moyes will look to make Everton hard to beat and recent Premier League results have been mainly positive, but the side have lost heavily at home against both Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United. The worrying part about that is the types of goals they have been conceding and Arsenal will look to take advantage of set pieces and any crossing opportunities, which gives the visitor the edge.
In recent years, Arsenal struggled when visiting Goodison Park, but this fixture takes place at Hill Dickinson Stadium and the edge is with the away team.
Arsenal may not have looked as solid defensively with important players missing, but they have shown there is some teeth and depth in the attacking areas and that can show up in this late Saturday kick off.
