Football: English Premier League
Saturday 24th January 2025 - Kick Off 3pm
Fulham
Some important names will be back in the squad after international duty at the African Cup of Nations and Fulham are also in talks to make a big signing or two before the January transfer window closes. All of this suggests the club are backing manager Marco Silva and his ambitions to try and take Fulham into a UEFA competition next season.
Last weekend they conceded an injury time winner at Leeds United and that has left Fulham in 11th place in the Premier League table, but firmly in touch with those below 3rd place in terms of points. The side are back at Craven Cottage this weekend and Fulham have a 6-2-3 record here this season.
Fulham had been unbeaten in 6 games in all competitions before conceding late on in the 1-0 defeat at Elland Road last time out. Marco Silva will be expecting a positive reaction from his team who are unbeaten in 4 at Craven Cottage in all competitions, while winning 3 of those matches.
Kenny Tete and Emile Smith Rowe will need to pass fitness tests, while Sasa Lukic and Rodrigo Muniz are long-term absentees.
Brighton
For all of the huffing and puffing in the second half on Monday night, Brighton needed a moment of magic to finally break down the Bournemouth rearguard and earn a point in the last Premier League game played. Manager Fabian Hurzeler was not very happy with the Penalty that was awarded to Bournemouth in the first half, but he might have hoped for a bit more from his own team in the final third.
The two points dropped at the Amex Stadium means Brighton will go into this weekend in the position below the hosts, although still in touch with the battle for European spots. The Seagulls have a 2-4-5 away record in the top flight and that is the major reason they are not higher up the League standings.
Brighton's late equaliser on Monday means they are unbeaten in 5 games in all competitions, but they have been finding wins hard to come by and have just 2 from the last 10 fixtures played. They have not won any of the last 4 away Premier League games, but Brighton did earn a 1-2 win at Old Trafford in the FA Cup Third Round.
Maxim De Cuyper missed out last time out with an illness and is a doubt. Mats Wieffer is hoping to return next week.
Head to Head
Brighton and Fulham drew 1-1 at the Amex Stadium on the opening weekend.
Fulham have won each of the last 3 games at Craven Cottage against The Seagulls.
Prediction
Two teams that will be hoping to push towards European qualification over the coming months meet in a Premier League fixture on Saturday.
Out of the two, Fulham have been finding a bit more consistency in the final third and that has resulted in a few more matches being turned from draws into wins.
The margins went against Marco Silva's men last week as they were narrowly beaten by Leeds United, but that was at Elland Road and Fulham have been more comfortable at Craven Cottage.
With key players returning from the African Cup of Nations, Fulham will certainly feel they can get forward and cause problems for a Brighton team that have been struggling for clean sheets. This has been most evident away from home and Brighton have not enjoyed recent visits to Craven Cottage with the last 3 games here all ending in relatively high-scoring defeats.
3 of the last 4 Brighton away games have all ended with at least three goals shared out ahead of this latest trip to this part of West London.
At the same time, 5 of the last 6 fixtures hosted by Fulham have also ended with at least three goals scored and conditions look decent enough on Saturday to allow both teams to express themselves.
An early goal would get things going and spark the fixture and backing at least three goals to be scored looks the likely outcome with both teams expected to score at least once.
