Liverpool
The tactical decisions made by Arne Slot ahead of the Champions League Quarter Final First Leg at Paris Saint-Germain did not pay off and Liverpool are perhaps a little fortunate to 'only' be trailing by two goals. The Second Leg is a slight distraction this weekend, but Liverpool cannot afford to take the eye of the ball in the Premier League, despite the top five now officially returning to the Champions League next season.
The manager is under pressure and the likelihood is that this is a season in which Liverpool will not win any silverware- failing to finish in the Champions League places would be much more difficult for Arne Slot to explain and would likely mean a departure in the summer. The Reds will head into the Premier League weekend in 5th place in the table and just a point ahead of Chelsea, while Liverpool have an 8-4-3 record at Anfield.
Liverpool have won 1 of the last 6 games in all competitions and they have suffered 4 losses in that time, including in each of the last 3 fixtures played. Since losing to Manchester City at Anfield, Liverpool have won 3 of the last 4 here in all competitions, but the last Premier League game ended 1-1 against Tottenham Hotspur.
Mo Salah was an unused substitute in the defeat in the French capital and will be expecting to start. Other changes are likely to be made with the manager looking to freshen up his options as Liverpool try and balance upcoming commitments.
Fulham
The fightback to beat Burnley in the last Premier League fixture played means Fulham return to action with a real aim at trying to earn a spot in European Football for next season. Marco Silva's future remains uncertain as manager of the club, but Fulham are still playing for the Portuguese and they will be looking to take advantage of the schedule.
Three weeks away from competitive action is an issue, but Fulham should be rested and prepared as they return in 9th place in the Premier League table and just 2 points behind rivals Brentford in the top seven. The form at Craven Cottage has been most important for Fulham who travel to the North West with a 4-3-8 away record in the top flight.
Fulham have won 4 of the last 7 games played in all competitions and the victory over Burnley ended a run of 3 without a victory. During that time, Fulham had suffered a couple of defeats, but both had surprisingly been at Craven Cottage. Fulham are unbeaten in 3 away games in all competitions ahead of this fixture at Anfield and had won 2 in a row before the goalless draw at Nottingham Forest.
Calvin Bassey is expected to be available, but both Harrison Reed and Kenny Tete may miss out.
Head to Head
These two teams played out a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage earlier this season.
Liverpool had beaten Fulham 3 times in a row at home, but had to settle for the same scoreline when last hosting them in December 2024.
Prediction
All has not been right at Anfield for some time and the 2-0 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League Quarter Final leaves Arne Slot and the Liverpool squad facing another really big week.
The only positive is that Liverpool are hosting both games over the next few days before the first ever Merseyside derby to be hosted at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Arne Slot will be under some pressure to make the right team selection for both this Premier League game and the Champions League Quarter Final Second Leg coming up and the Liverpool fans are nervy. That tension from the stands can make things very difficult on the pitch, although Liverpool should be respected for having won 3 of the last 4 games at home in all competitions.
They have regularly found things difficult against Fulham though and that could be the case again this Saturday.
While Liverpool had been chased around in defeats at Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, Fulham have had a few more days to prepare for this fixture.
The win over Burnley before the March international break will have given the squad the motivation to push into the European spots in the top flight, even if Marco Silva's future with Fulham remains unclear. There are players in the attacking third who can cause a lot of problems for Liverpool and especially with the onus on the home team to get forward.
Liverpool have found plenty of goals at home in recent games here and that makes them dangerous, while the likes of Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo can come in and freshen things up.
With the way the past week has gone, it would not surprise me at all if Liverpool scored a late goal and ended up covering this Asian Handicap line.
However, they are a short price and the layers know that people will back Liverpool even on the current form being produced.
Fulham are capable of scoring at Anfield and that may be enough to avoid a big defeat here at the very least.
