Manchester United
Three weeks have passed since Manchester United were last in action, but they will have heard the positive news that the top five of the English Premier League will be invited into the Champions League next season. This will give the club a big financial boost, although there are still some big decisions to be made about personnel and the future of caretaker manager Michael Carrick.
After taking over from Ruben Amorim, Michael Carrick has done his chances of taking the permanent job no harm, but everyone associated with Manchester United are trying to keep the focus on the fixtures coming up. They are 3rd in the Premier League table and 7 points clear of Chelsea in 6th and Manchester United will be looking to improve the 10-3-2 record at Old Trafford and maintain that gap ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge next weekend.
Manchester United have lost 1 of the 10 games played under Michael Carrick and they have won 7 of those matches, although had to settle for a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth last time out. Home form has been a huge benefit for Manchester United who have won all 5 Premier League fixtures played at Old Trafford since Michael Carrick came in as interim manager.
Harry Maguire is suspended and both Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko are hoping to have overcome knocks. Lisandro Martinez could be involved this weekend, while Patrick Dorgu is also closing in on a return.
Leeds United
They took the scenic route to the FA Cup Semi Final after blowing a 0-2 lead at West Ham United deep into second half injury time last Sunday. Eventually Leeds United made their way to Wembley Stadium on Penalties, but it was a tough afternoon for Daniel Farke who has seen a number of key players pick up injuries.
The main focus for Farke and the board is making sure Leeds United are still playing Premier League Football in August and the side are 15th in the standings. They play last this weekend so the current 4 point gap between Leeds United and West Ham United in 18th may be much closer when kicking off at the home of a big rival. The side have a 1-7-7 away record in the Premier League where Leeds United have scored 15 goals and conceded 28.
Leeds United have lost just 2 of the last 10 games played in all competitions, but they have not been able to put some real distance between themselves and the drop zone because of too many results ending in draws. They could not even convert the 0-2 lead at the London Stadium with 93 minutes on the clock into a win and Leeds United have drawn 6 away games in a row in all competitions.
Joe Rodon, Anton Stach and Noah Okafor picked up knocks in the FA Cup Quarter Final and are expected to miss out. Gabriel Gudmundsson and Daniel James are also doubts.
Head to Head
Leeds United and Manchester United drew 1-1 at Elland Road in what proved to be Ruben Amorim's last game in charge of the latter.
Manchester United had beaten Leeds United in consecutive matches at Old Trafford before the 2-2 draw in February 2023.
Prediction
The resilience of Leeds United has seen them grind their way away from the bottom three, but the lack of recent wins means there is still a real pressure on the team.
Even when putting together a solid lead in a Cup tie, Leeds United just showed some vulnerabilities in being able to finally secure a win. The eventual success on Penalties at West Ham United will have the team feeling pretty good, but Leeds United also lost some key players to injury and this is a very tough game.
The likes of West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest will be looking to build the pressure by picking up big points before Leeds United kick off, but Daniel Farke's team will have to concentrate for long periods to earn a positive result at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have taken advantage of only concentrating on the Premier League and the home form has really been key to guiding them into the top three.
Returning to the Champions League is the basic ambition for the club from here and Michael Carrick has helped the squad oversee some very good results. It is still a small sample and that makes some wary of giving him the permanent job, but the focus is to make sure Manchester United remain on track to return to the top European competition and all the financial support that offers the club.
Since coming in as manager, Manchester United have won all 5 games played at Old Trafford and they have scored plenty of goals here.
That may be the case again on Monday, even after a three week break between competitive matches and Manchester United's attacking numbers at Old Trafford have been pretty good.
Leeds United may feel they can play a part, but it could be a tough night if they are to fall behind early and the focus may instead drift towards the big game with Wolves coming up next weekend.
This is a rivalry game and that can become a factor, but Manchester United should still have enough to secure another confident win in front of the home fans.
