West Ham United

A late goal two weeks ago helped West Ham United just keep themselves above Tottenham Hotspur, but last weekend will have really hurt Nuno Espirito Santo and his players. Out of the two teams, West Ham United would have felt they had a 'better' chance of earning a positive result when travelling to Brentford and Spurs facing Aston Villa, but it did not turn out that way at all.

The 3-0 defeat at Brentford may have flattered the hosts, but it is a body blow for West Ham United who slipped back into the bottom three just twenty-four hours later after Spurs won at Aston Villa. There is now a single point between West Ham United and safety, but they have a significantly poorer goal difference compared with Tottenham Hotspur and the much tougher game on paper. The Hammers have a 5-4-8 record at the London Stadium in the top flight this season.

West Ham United had been unbeaten in 4 games in all competitions in normal time and had won 2 of 3 Premier League fixtures before the heavy defeat in West London last weekend. Nuno Espirito Santo has guided West Ham United to a 9 game unbeaten run in normal time at the London Stadium in all competitions.

The squad may have taken a hit in the confidence department, but they are physically available for the manager in this big fight to avoid the drop.

Arsenal

Some of the decisions may have landed in Arsenal's favour in the Champions League Semi Final Second Leg win over Atletico Madrid, but they did deserve their place in the Final of the premier European competition. This was achieved twenty-four hours after Manchester City handed Arsenal the initiative in the Premier League title race and we are at that time of the season when nerves become a big factor.

Mikel Arteta will be aware that his team will be English Champions if they win the remaining three Premier League games, but this may be the biggest test left for Arsenal. The Gunners have a 9-5-3 away record ahead of this fixture, but the picture ahead of the game will have changed when Manchester City play earlier in the weekend in their bid to close the 5 point gap between the teams.

Arsenal looked to be rocking when producing a single win in 6 games in all competitions, but they have steadied things by winning 3 of the last 4 ahead of this Premier League fixture. It should be noted that the majority of recent games have been at home and Arsenal have won 1 of the last 5 away games in all competitions, while losing the last away Premier League game at Manchester City.

Jurrien Timber is a doubt for the away team. Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze were replaced before the hour mark on Tuesday, but those seem to have been tactical decisions.

Head to Head

Arsenal beat West Ham United 2-0 at home earlier this season.

Not only have Arsenal won 3 of the last 4 Premier League games played on this ground, but the last two have been won 0-6 and 2-5.

Prediction

Writing this before the Saturday fixtures does make it more difficult- there is a real belief Arsenal could run rampant IF Manchester City fail to win on Saturday, but there is a different sort of pressure on them if the gap between the two title rivals is down to 2 points.

In recent years Arsenal have really enjoyed playing at the London Stadium, which is markedly easier than travelling to Upton Park, while you have to believe that there is a huge confidence surging through the squad after reaching the Champions League Final.

Some fans will be thinking about a big Double, but a Manchester City win on Saturday does mean Arsenal can lose some impetus in the title race by failing to win on Sunday.

Adding to the uncertainty is West Ham United's predicament- after looking to be on course for survival, the 3-0 defeat at Brentford coupled with both Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest winning big away games on Sunday and Monday respectively has pushed The Hammers back into the bottom three.

They are desperate for points and West Ham United have won consecutive home Premier League games, but the heavy defeats that they have suffered to Arsenal over the last couple of years will be a concern.

Nuno Espirito Santo has guided his previous teams to strong results against Arsenal, which will help, but there is a lot of pressure on West Ham United who cannot afford to lose twenty-four hours before Tottenham Hotspur host Leeds United.

In each of the last three seasons, Arsenal have failed to complete the Premier League double over West Ham United, which is encouraging for the home team. Despite the improved results and performances, there does feel like a significant gap between the teams, but we are in May and pressure does funny things to players.

Over the last week, it has felt like Arsenal have gone back to basics when it comes to the defensive side of the ball and so backing them to win to nil does look a big price. However, West Ham United have created opportunities from set pieces and they will be dangerous as long as they can prevent Arsenal from mowing through them.

Mikel Arteta's team are in the driving seat, but they have only won 1 of the last 5 away games in all competitions. The squad is looking healthier with more options from the bench, but writing this before the weekend games begin has me leaning towards backing fewer than three goals to be shared out.

The last 2 between the clubs have ended that way, while the desperation of both teams for the three points could see a tight, competitive fixture played out.

A Manchester City failure to win would have me leaning much more towards Arsenal to play with some freedom that West Ham United would not have, and that would likely lead to a routine away win. Unfortunately the result of that Saturday fixture is not known on Friday when this is posted and so backing the under 2.5 goals option at odds against may be the best play to recommend.
