Everton
Depending what happens in the FA Cup Final on Saturday, 8th place may yet offer European Football to teams in the English Premier League. David Moyes is one of the managers that have openly stated their ambition to take their team into Europe, but Everton have conceded too many late goals, which has led to a lot of dropped points and left them looking in from the outside.
Two games remain and Everton are 10th in the Premier League table, although they are only 2 points behind Brentford who currently occupy that 8th place mentioned. All that can be done is winning out and Everton will be concluding their first season at Hill Dickinson Stadium where they have compiled a 6-5-7 record in the top flight.
Everton have won 1 of the last 7 Premier League games, but they have conceded goals in the 77th minute or later in each of the last 4 fixtures which have cost the team 6 points. Frustratingly for the fans, Everton have conceded in the 100th minute to lose 1-2 against Liverpool and 97th minute to draw 3-3 with Manchester City in the last two games at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Idrissa Gueye may be able to be involved this weekend.
Sunderland
No matter how this season concludes, it has been a hugely successful campaign for Sunderland and the fans may believe the only motivation left for the players is finishing above rivals Newcastle United. Regis Le Bris had pushed Sunderland close in challenging for European places, which would have been a huge surprise to many, but recent results have just slipped as a long season has perhaps taken a toll.
They will go into the penultimate weekend of the season in 12th place in the Premier League table and 2 points above Newcastle United, but the race for Europe looks to be run. The Black Cats have a 4-6-8 away record this season and Sunderland have scored 14 goals and conceded 27 in those matches.
Sunderland earned consecutive Premier League wins either side of the March international break, but they have not won any of the last 4 as the season has wound down. The side have won 1 of the last 4 away games in all competitions and Sunderland were held to a 1-1 draw at Molineux last time out on their travels.
Dan Ballard is suspended, but Bertrand Traore is expected to be passed fit.
Head to Head
These two teams drew 1-1 at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League and also 1-1 in the FA Cup Third Round tie at Hill Dickinson Stadium, although Sunderland ultimately prevailed in the latter on Penalties.
Everton had beaten Sunderland in each of the last 3 meetings at Goodison Park before that Cup tie in their new Stadium back in January.
Prediction
You have to feel that the Everton odds on price is very much down to the fact that they 'need' the three points more than Sunderland, but recent performances also give the home team a narrow edge in this contest.
Late goals have continued to haunt David Moyes and his hopes of leading Everton back into Europe.
The 6 points dropped in the last four Premier League games would have had Everton pushing for a top six place, but instead they have work to do in order to finish in the top eight.
Anything less than a victory on Sunday would likely end fading European hopes, but Moyes will be pretty happy with what he has seen from his team going forward. They have created chances and caused problems for opponents, but Everton have been disappointing when it comes to the defensive side of the work, especially as Moyes will be seen as someone who would work on tactics to negate opponents.
They will have to be wary about this Sunderland team that showed real attacking intent against Manchester United and who have been able to dig in and make things very difficult for opponents all season.
However, they have failed to score in 2 of the last 3 Premier League games and Sunderland have had a long season, which may see them come up a little short in this one.
The draw feels like a real player in the contest, but Everton may just have enough quality in the final third to find the goals that can earn them a priceless win and a chance to play for European spots on the final day of the campaign.
The Pick :
Everton 1-0 Sunderland
