After a couple of promotions to the Premier League, Cardiff City missed out on an immediate return in 2020 and the club have been sliding in the wrong direction since then. That culminated in the relegation into League One at the end of the 2024 season, but Cardiff City were able to make a fast start in that Division and they were able to hold on for automatic promotion back into the second tier of English Football.
The fans will already be looking forward to the Welsh derby fixtures against Wrexham and Swansea City and Cardiff City will get to host the former of those on the return to the Championship. In reality, this looks like it will be a season in which they fight for consolidation at this level, and that means Cardiff City will be tasked with putting a strong home record on the board.

Wrexham
They are part-owned by one of the leading names in Hollywood and it would have felt like Wrexham fans were living in a Hollywood story as the club earned promotions from the National League in 2023, League Two in 2024 and League One in 2025. Some had tipped up Wrexham to find the leap into the Championship to finally slow that momentum, but this is an ownership with big ambitions and the players and management have fed off of that.
Instead of merely consolidating in the Championship, Wrexham finished 7th in the standings last season and only 2 points behind Hull City, who eventually were promoted to the Premier League. A similar finish would be good enough to earn a Play Off spot in the expanded format of the 2026/27 season, but Wrexham may need to bring in some more new faces to freshen things up in what has been a relatively quiet transfer window.
Wrexham were beaten 1-0 at Middlesbrough in the League Cup First Round last week, but Phil Parkinson was pretty content with the level of performance produced against one of the promotion chasing rivals. The Red Dragons struggled for consistency down the stretch last season and that ultimately cost them a place in the top six, but Wrexham did lose just 1 of the last 4 Championship fixtures played. Wrexham have lost 3 of the last 4 away games in all competitions as they open up the new League campaign.
Head to Head
It has been over twenty-four years since Cardiff City and Wrexham last met in a League fixture and that was when both clubs were playing in the third tier of English Football.
However, the most recent fixture was played in the League Cup last season when Cardiff City won 1-2 at the Racecourse Ground.
