2026-10-15 - Australia vs New Zealand

A Sports Betting Pick by Stu

Australia v New Zealand
Rugby League : Australia : World Cup 2026
Thursday 15th October 2026 - KO 2005 AEST

Australia

Australia have assembled a squad packed with representative experience and attacking weapons. Isaah Yeo captains a side that includes Cameron Munster, Reece Walsh, Harry Grant, Tom Trbojevic, Latrell Mitchell, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Patrick Carrigan. It is a squad with the power to dominate through the middle and the speed to punish opponents who become slow getting back into their defensive line.

The major talking point heading into Thursday is the likely halves combination. With Nathan Cleary unavailable, Mitchell Moses is expected to partner Munster. That pairing offers plenty of attacking potential, although it has less time together than some established international combinations. Moses brings a sharp kicking game and the ability to put runners through gaps, while Munster thrives when he can play instinctively, challenge the defensive line and create uncertainty around the ruck.

Reece Walsh is another potential game-breaker who has somehow been selected over both Tedesco and Edwards. His acceleration and willingness to attack the line can turn a routine set into a scoring opportunity, particularly if Harry Grant and the Australian forwards establish quick play-the-balls. Australia will want to move the ball early enough to stretch New Zealand's defensive line, rather than allowing the Kiwis to settle into a grinding contest.

The question for Australia is whether their new combinations click immediately. The talent is undeniable, but a World Cup opener against New Zealand is hardly a gentle introduction. If the Kangaroos start carelessly, the Kiwis have the discipline and strike power to make them pay.

New Zealand

New Zealand are a genuine threat to the champions for this years world cup, which to be honest is the first time I believe they have a genuine shot. New Zealand have the personnel to challenge Australia in every department. Captain James Fisher-Harris leads a powerful forward group featuring Joseph Tapine, Moses Leota, Leo Thompson and Naufahu Whyte. Behind them, Erin Clark provides versatility and work rate, while the outside backs offer plenty of speed and finishing ability.

The return of Jahrome Hughes could be one of the defining stories of the tournament. The 2024 Dally M Medallist missed a significant period of international rugby league through neck and shoulder injuries, but he returns with a point to prove. Hughes has the vision to identify defensive weaknesses, the footwork to threaten the line himself and the kicking skill to keep opponents guessing. He has also spoken openly about the pain of the 2022 semi-final defeat and his determination to help New Zealand go one step further this time.

And NZ have 2 new players available! Kalyn Ponga adds another dimension. His ability to beat defenders one-on-one and create opportunities from broken play gives New Zealand a genuine attacking threat, while Kodi Nikorima and Jeremy Marshall-King provide additional creativity and options around the middle. The Kiwis also have the finishing ability of Ronaldo Mulitalo and Jamayne Isaako, who was the NRL's leading point-scorer in 2026.

The other new player is particularly intriguing, Dane Gagai, who joins New Zealand after previously representing Australia. His experience and competitiveness will be valuable, especially against Latrell Mitchell, with whom he has a history of tough match-ups. That battle could be pivotal if the game is decided by a moment of individual brilliance.

New Zealand's best chance is to match Australia physically, stay composed under pressure and make the most of their opportunities. If Hughes and Ponga can combine effectively, the Kiwis have enough attacking quality to trouble the defending champions.

Odds

Australia on their home turf start as favourites, $1.72 to $2.40, the line is 4.5 points and combined points 38.5

The Betting Verdict

Thursday 15 October 2026 · Allianz Stadium, Sydney · 8:05pm AEDT

The 2026 Rugby League World Cup first match gets the blockbuster opening it deserves, with Australia and New Zealand renewing one of international rugby league’s fiercest rivalries. The Kangaroos begin their title defence on home soil, but the Kiwis arrive with genuine belief that they can upset the favourites and announce themselves as serious contenders to lift the trophy.

This is a fascinating match-up because Australia have the depth and individual brilliance to overwhelm almost any opponent, while New Zealand have the forward power, playmaking quality and recent international pedigree to make this a far tighter contest than the odds might suggest. The Kiwis will also be desperate to make amends for their narrow 16-14 semi-final defeat to Australia at the 2022 World Cup.

Jahrome Hughes v Mitchell Moses is the contest that could shape the match. Hughes is an established international playmaker returning with motivation and confidence, while Moses has the opportunity to make a major statement in the Australian No.7 jersey with Nathan Clearys absence. Whichever halfback controls field position, kicks more accurately and makes the better decisions under pressure will give his team a significant advantage.

The battle between the forward packs is just as important. Yeo, Carrigan and Fa’asuamaleaui will want Australia playing on the front foot, but Fisher-Harris, Leota and Tapine are capable of matching that intensity. If New Zealand can slow the Australian ruck and force Munster and Moses to operate behind a retreating forward pack, the favourites could become frustrated.

Fullbacks, Reece Walsh and Kalyn Ponga are both capable of producing something special. Australia will look to Walsh's speed and support play, while New Zealand will hope Ponga who is in career best form can exploit any gaps created by Hughes. Both fullbacks can change a game in a matter of seconds, making defensive organisation and kick-chase discipline crucial.

Australia deserve to start favourites, particularly with home-ground support and the depth available across their squad. Their outside backs are dangerous, their middle forwards have the power to generate momentum, and Munster can be devastating when he gets freedom to play what he sees.

However, I don't see this as a match where Australia should automatically be backed at any price. New Zealand's forward pack is strong enough to keep the contest tight, and Hughes return gives them a proven playmaker who can turn pressure into points. The Kiwis also have the motivation of avenging their 2022 semi-final defeat, and their recent international performances have shown they can beat Australia convincingly when everything clicks.

My expectation is that Australia will have slightly more possession and attacking opportunities, but New Zealand will remain in the contest deep into the second half. The deciding factor could be Australia's ability to convert pressure into tries rather than settling for field position alone.

Australia by two in a close, high-quality opening encounter. New Zealand have enough firepower to win outright, but I give the Kangaroos a narrow edge at home. My preferred bet is New Zealand +4.5
