Fulham
The League Cup Fourth Round defeat is the most disappointing result of the last month, but Alvaro Arbeloa will be pleased with the Fulham upturn in the Premier League. Last Saturday they battled for a deserved 1-1 draw at Villa Park to maintain the current momentum and Fulham fans will be looking for a win on Saturday that will make the November international break feel more comfortable.
Recent results have dragged Fulham out of the bottom three, but they are still 15th in the Premier League standings and just a couple of points clear of the relegation places. There is little doubt that Fulham need to improve the 1-1-2 record at Craven Cottage where they have scored 6 goals, but also conceded 7.
Fulham were beaten in the League Cup Fourth Round by Crystal Palace, but they are unbeaten in 3 Premier League games and picked up 7 important points in that run to ease the pressure on the manager. The side should have won the last League game here much more comfortably than the final 1-0 scoreline against Hull City, but Alvaro Arbeloa will just be pleased Fulham won that day.
Ryan Sessegnon is available after serving a domestic suspension and that gives the manager a full squad of players to choose from.
Newcastle United
An increasing pressure is being exerted on manager Matthias Jaissle at the helm of Newcastle United and the fans are beginning to turn against him. The board will be hoping they can avoid having to make any early decisions against Jaissle, who was appointed just before the start of the new season, but a positive result on Saturday will help.
Losing to Everton on Monday night means Newcastle United have slipped to 13th in the Premier League table, although they are still 4 points clear of the bottom three. The Toon Army will have much bigger expectations of the club than merely surviving though and they will travel to West London hoping to see Newcastle United improve the 2-0-2 away record.
Newcastle United have played 5 games in all competitions since returning from the last international break and they have lost 4 of those following consecutive defeats to Everton. The Magpies did win the last away Premier League game at Crystal Palace, but they have lost 3 of the last 4 on their travels in all competitions and Newcastle United have conceded 11 goals in those losses.
Jacob Ramsey is suspended, while Tino Livramento and Lewis Miley are both doubts.
Head to Head
Both Premier League games were won by the home team last season and Newcastle United also beat Fulham 2-1 at St James' Park in the League Cup Quarter Final.
Fulham had lost 5 in a row at Craven Cottage when hosting Newcastle United, but have reversed that by winning the last 2 in this part of West London.
Prediction
When the last international break came around, Alvaro Arbeloa would have felt much more uncomfortable than Matthias Jaissle, but it would have also felt like it has come early enough for the fans and board to show some patience with a new manager.
Going into the November international break, the pressure has switched after Fulham produced some positive results and Newcastle United have suffered through some very poor outings.
This time the pressure will be much greater on the decision makers with what the fans perceive to be an underperforming manager and there is a significant movement building against Jaissle at St James' Park. The fans voiced their frustration after the 0-1 home defeat to Everton, while the travelling Toon Army have seen some heavy away defeats.
Newcastle United did win at Crystal Palace on their last visit to the capital, but now they are facing a Fulham team who have picked up momentum thanks to 7 points earned from the last 3 Premier League games played.
Last weekend Fulham played well against Aston Villa and they also dominated Hull City in the last League game here. They created more than enough chances to avoid defeat against Crystal Palace in the League Cup Fourth Round as well, but Alvaro Arbeloa needs his team to show more composure in the final third to really start moving up the Premier League standings.
He should be confident his team can create against a Newcastle United team who have lost 3 of the last 4 away games in all competitions and conceded 11 goals in those matches. Leeds United, Coventry City, Crystal Palace and Everton have all created quality chances against The Magpies when they have been the visiting opponent and Fulham should be able to do the same.
The home team will be helped in the knowledge they have beaten Newcastle United in each of the last 2 meetings at Craven Cottage and Fulham look like an odds against home team that can be backed this weekend.
