The Phillies were having some really serious problems scoring runs for a good part of June, which resulted in them slipping from their normal position of 1st in the NL East. However, since the return of shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who was on the DL for about 1 month, the Philadelphia offence looks completely different.
In his 2nd game back, Rollins hit the game winner, a walk-off home run to bring in the teams 6th and 7th run of the game. Indeed, in the 5 games since Rollins' return, the Phillies have scored a total of 30 runs. Quite a different offensive showing to when he was out.
Tonight, last year's finalists will head to Cincinnati for their first series following inter-league play. The increase in run production has come at a good time for Philly, as the Reds aren't exactly quiet themselves.
Pitching for Philadelphia will be Kyle Kendrick. The right-hander goes up to the mound in this one with some really ugly numbers, leaving me to believe the Reds will probably knock him around a fair bit. In his last 3 starts, Kendrick has an ugly 5.62ERA, despite his team winning all those games. With the pitcher likely to give up runs to a great home offence, the visitors will have to build on their own improved offence to win what is likely to be a high scoring match.
