Preview
These two National League teams continue their series at Citi Field after the San Francisco Giants (7-6) picked up a close win in Game 1 against the New York Mets (7-6). This is a four game series between the teams in New York.
The Giants have now won 6 of their last 8 games thanks to an extra innings win last night, while the New York Mets are on a 3 game losing streak following a fast start to the 2012 season.
Ryan Vogelsong will be sent to the mound for his second start of the season for San Francisco and he will be looking to improve on an 'inconsistent' first. Vogelsong gave up 2 runs but also issued 3 walks in just over 6 innings pitched as he took the decision loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The pitcher did go 6-1 from 13 appearances on the road last season, 12 of those coming in starts, and he had a 3.57 ERA. However, Vogelsong will need to put memories away of his only appearance at this ballpark when he allowed 5 runs and 4 walks in 4 innings pitched, although he was saved by the Giants bats in that one.
New York will send Mike Pelfrey to the mound who is yet to factor in a decision this season and has a 3.09 ERA. He has not had much luck in his previous 9 starts here, going 0-5 with a 4.97 ERA although he is coming off an impressive performance.
Pelfrey gave up just 1 run in 6 innings pitched against the Philadelphia Phillies in his last outing and was described as being 'outstanding'. He is also 2-0 from 4 career starts against the Giants and has a 1.84 ERA in those games.
Head to Head
San Francisco are now 9-3 in the last 12 meetings against the New York Mets thanks to that win last night.
The Giants are also 4-1 in their last 5 visits to the Mets.
Prediction
I think this has all the potential of being another close game between the teams following the game last night, but I think the New York Mets will be able to come out on top in this one.
I believe they have the edge on the mound with Mike Pelfrey, while they have shown enough life with their bats to suggest they can get him enough run support in this one.
Ryan Vogelsong has bad memories of playing at this ballpark and does provide opportunities for his opponents so the Mets look the call at the pick 'em prices.
