The first semi-finals of the US Open women's singles will be between American Serena Williams and Italian Roberta Vinci.
In order to get to the semi-finals, Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus by 2-1, while Vinci managed to beat K. Mladenovic by 2-1 as well. Last season S. Williams won the US Open while Vinci only made it to the third round going out to S. Peng.
Serena Willima is at the top - number 1 of the WTP list and bidding to win the Grand Slam this season. She has won 69 titles in her career so far. Five of them this season - Australian Open, Miami, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and Cincinnati - where she defeated M. Sharapova, S. Navaro, L. Safarova, G. Muguruza and S. Halep in those finals. She did reached the semi-finals in Madrid and Toronto when she lost to P. Kvitova and B. Bencic.
Serena Williams showed why she is number 1 when she beat her sister Venus in the quarter-finals even though it went to three sets. Serena dominated the first set, while Venus the second set. But in the third set and the second game after Serena made the break she took control of the match until the end.
Meanwhile Vinvi is 43rd in the WTP list and she has improved compared to her position last season. She has won a total of nine titles in her career but she has yet to win a title this year as she went out in the first or second round. She did reached the final in Nurnberg but then went down to K. Knapp 2-1.
Earlier this season she did well in Istanbul and Toronto as she reahced the quarter-finals but went out to M. Rybarikova and S. Williams, respectively. It has to be said that against K. Mladenovic in the quarter-finals she was the underdog but she played an aggresive game and thanks to a good first service she has made the best result in her season by reaching the semi-finals of the US Open.
As for their head to head, Serena Williams has won all of their four meetings Their last meeting was in Toronto and S. Williams won 6-3, 6-3. Vinci has yet to win a single set in their past four meetings so it should stay that way, and no doubt Williams will once again start here as favourites. Vinci did played well in all her matches at the US Open so she should give Williams some resistance here.
