Sydney Roosters
The Roosters have re-established themselves as one of the competition's most complete teams. After an inconsistent start to the season, Trent Robinson's side has found balance through a powerful forward pack and an increasingly settled spine.
The arrival of Daly Cherry-Evans has transformed their game management, while young half Sam Walker continues to grow in confidence alongside one of the game's premier organisers.
The Roosters are placed 3rd off a 10-5 record, 5 teams are within touching distance though so the Roosters need to keep on winning to remain in the top 4.
Saturday also marks a special occasion for veteran winger Daniel Tupou, who is set to celebrate his 300th NRL appearance. Few players have enjoyed a more consistent career in the modern era, and the Roosters will undoubtedly be eager to mark the milestone with a victory.
James Tedesco continues to defy age with another outstanding campaign, while Mark Nawaqanitawase has become one of the competition's most dangerous aerial threats, giving the Roosters multiple avenues to attack both edges.
Up front, Victor Radley, Spencer Leniu and Naufahu Whyte have laid an outstanding platform in recent weeks. Their ability to win the middle third allows Connor Watson to play with speed around the ruck, creating opportunities for Cherry-Evans to dictate field position with his elite kicking game.
The only concern for the Roosters is the absence of representative forwards Lindsay Collins and Nat Butcher and of course how many of their stars back up from Origin 3, but their depth has been one of the club's greatest strengths throughout the season.
Parramatta Eels
The return of Mitchell Moses has completely changed the look of the Eels attack. His kicking game, organisation and leadership immediately make Parramatta a more dangerous football side, while Ronald Volkman benefits enormously from having an experienced halfback directing play.
The Eels are no hope of making the finals placed in 14th 6-10, with the second worst points differential in the competition.
At fullback, Isaiah Iongi continues to develop into one of the club's brightest young talents. His speed and willingness to support through the middle have added another dimension to Parramatta's attack, while Josh Addo-Carr remains capable of producing tries from virtually nothing whenever given space.
The forward pack has also shown improvement. Jack de Belin has added toughness and experience since arriving at the club, while Jack Williams continues to produce consistent performances through the middle. Parramatta's biggest issue has not been effort, it's been maintaining defensive intensity for the full 80 minutes.
Last week's upset victory over Manly demonstrated exactly what this team is capable of when Moses controls the contest. The Eels completed at a high rate, defended with desperation and capitalised on nearly every attacking opportunity, of which there were many from Manly. They'll need a similar performance against a Roosters outfit that rarely beats itself.
Odds
The Roosters are heavy favorites, $1.20 to $4.50, the line is 14.5 points and combined points 49.5
The Betting Verdict
The Sydney Roosters return to Allianz Stadium on Saturday night knowing every competition point is crucial as they continue their pursuit of a top-four finish. Standing in their way are the Parramatta Eels, a side that has shown genuine improvement over the past month despite sitting near the bottom of the ladder. While the market has installed the Roosters as overwhelming favourites, recent form suggests Parramatta are capable of making this a far more competitive contest than many expect.
Overall H2H has Sydney out in front, 28-1-15 and the Roosters win 64% at home with the Eels 13-18 at this venue. The Roosters should still prove too strong over 80 minutes, particularly at Allianz Stadium, but expecting them to win by two converted tries against an improving Parramatta side may be asking a little too much.
The Roosters possess the superior spine, greater depth, stronger defence and the home-ground advantage. Spencer Leniu, Naufahu Whyte and Victor Radley will look to overpower Parramatta's forwards early, while Jack de Belin and Jack Williams must match that physicality if the visitors are to remain competitive. If the Roosters consistently win the ruck, Connor Watson's speed from dummy-half could become the difference.
Parramatta have quietly become much more competitive since Mitchell Moses returned. Their upset victory over Manly showed they can challenge quality opposition when they complete their sets and build pressure. Moses kicking game should prevent the Roosters from constantly starting sets inside Parramatta territory, giving the Eels opportunities to stay in the contest.
The Roosters should collect the two competition points, but with Mitchell Moses back steering the side, the many Roosters players backing up from Origin 3 and Parramatta showing far greater resilience over the past month, the generous start appeals as the better betting play.
