Galway United face Shamrock Rovers on Sunday evening in a clash with importance for bothe ends of the League of Ireland table. Galway currently sit third from bottom while Rovers are top of the table and hitting top form. Galway are only 7 points clear of Drogheda in second from bottom, but have played a game more. They will be eager to pull clear of Drogheda as the side who finishes second from bottom in the Premier Division. will face a relegation play off with the runners up from the First Division.
Galway's from has not been good. They have managed only 1 win in their last 10 games and that was over Drogheda. They have also failed to win their last 5 home games. What is more worrying is they have only managed 5 wins all season and 4 of them were over the two sides below them in the league, Bray and Drogheda. They did produce one major shock when winning away at Champions Bohemians, but Bohemians did have 2 players sent off. Galway have also faced Shamrock Rovers twice this season and lost on both occasions.
Meanwhile its been a terrific week for Shamrock Rovers as they went back top of the table last sunday with a 4-0 thrashing of Dundalk. This was followed by a 1-1 draw against Beni Yehuda of Israel in the Europa League and if they come through a very tricky second leg they will face Juventus in the next round. Rovers are hitting top form and since the break in June they have got 10 points from a possible 12.
They were outstanding in their last 2 league games with wins over fellow title contenders Dundalk and St Patricks Athletic and were unlucky not to win their Europa League game despite only equalising late on. Rovers have also only lost once away from home all season and just as it was last season their away record is very impressive and slightly better than their home one. Rovers will definitely fancy their chances here and with Dundalk playing St Patricks Athleitc the same day a win would guarantee them of pulling clear off at least one of them sides.
