PREVIEW
And then there were two. It's the Superbowl, and once again, the New York Giants will come in as underdogs to try and beat the New England Patriots. Except, this time, no one is underestimating the Giants. For the 1st time ever, both starting quarterbacks have been Superbowl MVPs.
In 2007, the Patriots defeated every team they faced, only to fall 17-14 at the final hurdle, as Eli Manning led his Giants to a last gasp win. That puts the Patriots, who have already lost to the Giants earlier this season, in serious revenge mode. Behind Brady, this team is capable of some outrageous offence, as we have seen many times, most recently against the Denver Broncos.
But New York bring a defence that has only gotten better through the season, culminating in an insane run that has seen them beat 3 playoff teams with superior records, just like they did in 2007. If anyone can stifle Brady and the Patriots, this lot can.
The Patriots defence has been a huge worry all season, but we saw them play much better in their last two games, restricting Denver to just 10 and Baltimore to 20.
Many criticised the Patriots for not scoring enough but give them credit as Baltimore have a cracking defence (like I said, they would keep it close and beat the Patriots on the spread) and to restrict Baltimore to 20 was an improvement, because they had allowed the last 5 opponents before Denver to score more than that. Also, they made sure crucial passes weren't made late in the game, which if completed, would have surely eliminated the Pats.
This is going to be a tough game, no doubt, and I'm not even going to bother capping it, because it might well be decided by a moment of brilliance, as was the previous Superbowl meeting, where Manning connected with Tyree on that final drive.
My heart is saying the Patriots find a way, somehow, to gain revenge, because everything I read, see, review, tells me the Giants are the play, if for nothing else than current form.
Gronk is injured, but is he really not going to do anything in the big game? Do we not know how Belicheck works? C'mon, when is the answer ever that straightforward? When it looks clear, it probably goes the other way. I know I fell for it last time when I lost money on the Pats losing that Superbowl.
Maybe my judgement is clouded.
BETTING VERDICT
I'm going to enjoy this one, and in order to do so, my bet is going to have nothing to do with what happens on the pitch.
The biggest story through the 2nd half of this season has been about one man, and one man ONLY! PinnacleSports are offering almost 2/1 on him being mentioned during the 1st quarter of play.
In that time, we will surely see New England's offence and defence, both of whom found a way past this phenom, who was playing with God on his side. At a generous 2.98, I'll bet we hear Collinsworth or Michaels say "TEBOW".
