CHARLTON ATHLETIC
It’s a bottom half clash in the Championship on Sunday afternoon at The Valley as hosts Charlton Athletic take on Wigan Athletic with the home side looking to extend their unbeaten run to four league matches.
Despite Charlton’s lowly position of 19th place, The Addicks have put together an unbeaten run which includes draws with fourth placed Nottingham Forest, fifth placed Blackpool and last weekend’s away win at Blackburn Rovers which raised a few eyebrows. Charlton have also previously possessed a strong home record at The Valley but their home form so far has been a little sketchy with an overall record of 1-2-2 3/4.
However, Charlton will probably view the points shared with Nottingham Forest and Blackpool as points gained and these results will certainly give them a boost going into this fixture with Wigan.
This could well be a low-scoring affair though with only Yeovil Town (1 goal) scoring fewer home goals than Charlton in the Championship.
WIGAN ATHLETIC
Onto Wigan Athletic now then, and I won’t harp on about their Europa League participation and the potential harm it could ultimately do for The Latics’ play-off hopes, but they find themselves in 14th place and two matches in hand to make up on the bulk of the rest of the division. Despite remaining unbeaten at home with a record of 3-2-0 10/6, perhaps the travelling aspect of the Europa League is starting to take it’s toll on Wigan who have a poor away record of 1-0-4 4/5.
The Latics have suffered four straight away defeats on the trot with losses at Bournemouth 0-1, Leicester City 0-2, Watford 0-1 and Blackpool 0-1 which has held back their promising home form, and the worrying thing for manager Owen Coyle is that his side have failed to hit the back of the net in each of their last four away defeats.
THE BETTING VERDICT:
Taking the statistics into account, it looks like we’re not destined for a blockbuster by any means and it could be a tight, dour affair with the Under 2.5 looking favourable as well. But I’ll back Charlton Athletic with the generously priced quarter ball in their favour and they could even nick this maybe 1-0.
