Tennis News :: Roger Federer surprised that Andy Murray is favourite for Aussie Open

World number two Roger Federer has expressed surprise at Andy Murray’s status as favourite going into the Australian Open on Monday.

Speaking at the launch of the AAMI Classic – which begins on Wednesday at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club – Federer said being the bookies’ favourite would be of little help to the young Scot.

"He’s put himself into a great position, [starting the year off] playing well in Doha and finishing strong last year, but it still does surprise me that the bookies say that because he’s never won a Slam" he said.

"Novak [Djokovic] is defending champion, Rafa [Nadal] had an incredible season last year and I won the last slam of last season, so it’s surprising to hear, but we’ll see what happens."
