Tennis News :: Sun Stops Play? Wimbledon 9/4 to close roof due to heatwave

Wimbledon’s roof may not have been rolled into action yet but with a heatwave underway bookie Paddy Power is now betting on whether the Centre Court cover will be closed to protect the players from excessive sunshine!

With temperatures forecast to rocket into the thirties this week Paddy Power is offering 9/4 (3.25) that the hitherto unused structure swings into action to shade the wilting players.

Wimbledon’s aces could be desperate for a bit of relief from the blistering afternoon sun and having already been used as a parasol for the Royal box, the roof and air-con system are more than able to lower the court temperatures to aid the players.

Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Wimbledon groundstaff and officials seemed desperate to show off their new £80million toy when a few spots of rain started falling on Andy Murray’s match at the weekend. If they can’t utilise it for rain maybe they’ll use the sunshine as an excuse instead.”

Paddy Power is also offering just 6/4 (2.50) that any player in the singles tournaments is forced to retire due to heat exhaustion.

Beyond Wimbledon the bookie is also betting on the UK’s top temp this week – with a thermometer busting 33ºc - 35ºc the favourite at 13/8 (2.61). The all-time record temperature could be under threat and Paddy Power is offering 3/1 that the UK surpasses the 38.1 ºc from 2003 this summer
