The first two games of this inter-League series have been split with a win apiece and the decider is an important one for both the Cleveland Guardians (60-64) and the San Diego Padres (66-58) as they push for Playoff spots in the American and National League respectively.
It feels like the Cleveland Guardians need a spark having lost five of the previous six games before taking the game played on Saturday. This poor run means the Guardians are 5 games behind the Chicago White Sox in the American League Central, while also being a game out of the Wild Card race.
That gap is far from insurmountable, but the Guardians also have four teams higher than them in the standings behind the third Wild Card spot and consistency has been missing.
The Guardians did snap San Diego's six game winning run on Saturday, but that run means the Padres are one of three teams sharing the same record in the National League who are sitting between second and fourth in the Wild Card standings. Tie-breakers are currently working against San Diego, who would be the odd team out if the regular season concluded today, but there has been enough seen from this team to believe they can outlast at least one of the Philadelphia Phillies or Arizona Diamondbacks.
San Diego will be looking to get back on track when handing the ball to Casey Mize who moved in a trade just before the deadline. The pitcher has a 4-7 record and 3.38 ERA in eighteen starts in 2026, but will be feeling much better after putting a solid second start in for the Padres following a disappointing debut.
Casey Mize will be familiar with the Cleveland Guardians having left the Detroit Tigers of the American League Central to play for the San Diego Padres. After allowing eight runs and being withdrawn in the 4th Inning in his debut for the Padres, Mize bounced back by restricting the Milwaukee Brewers to two runs in 6 Innings thrown, although he did not factor into the decision.
This will be the second time Casey Mize has faced the Cleveland Guardians this season having taken the decision loss in May despite only allowing two runs into the 7th Inning.
Cleveland will hand the ball to Tanner Bibee who has a 4-12 record and 3.99 ERA in twenty-five starts this season. The record is not reflective of the overall performances as Tanner Bibee moved past the 11 losses recorded last season, but recent outings have perhaps not been as strong as the pitcher would have hoped.

Prediction
Any time a long winning streak is ended, it can be tough for a team to bounce back immediately and that is really evident in the Major League with little time off between games.
The San Diego Padres will feel confident they can change that narrative behind Casey Mize, who is very familiar with the Cleveland Guardians.
Casey Mize was much more confident in his second start for San Diego compared with his first and he can give his team a chance to win this game.
Tanner Bibee will feel the same for the Cleveland Guardians, although this pitcher has not been in the best of recent form and that could be the difference in a game that means so much to both teams.
