The pitching staff stepped up for both of these American League East rivals as they got themselves out of a couple of jams through the opener on Friday. One Home Run was the difference between the New York Yankees (76-58) and the Boston Red Sox (73-61) and helped the home team snap a four game losing run to this rival and they meet in a double header on Saturday.
The opening game will see Carlos Rodon and Jake Bennett head to the mound for the respective teams as both the Yankees and Red Sox continue to believe they can fight their way into contention to win the American League East.
New York have been suffering through injuries throughout this season, but they are hoping some of the big batters will return in September to build up some rhythm through the last month of the regular season. The starting pitching rotation has also dealt with injuries and the Yankees will be welcoming back Max Fried in the second of the two games scheduled to be played on Saturday.
Earlier on it is Carlos Rodon who will take the starting job and he has only just returned from a six week layoff of his own.
Carlos Rodon has a 4-2 record and 3.15 ERA in his eleven starts made this season, but the Yankees will be hoping he can complete the next couple of months without any more setbacks. The pitcher did not give up an earned run when he faced the Boston Red Sox at the end of June, but Carlos Rodon has only just returned this month and this is the third start since that return.
He does have a 0-0 record and 2.25 ERA in those two starts, but Carlos Rodon is not being pushed too hard and that has meant being withdrawn after completing 4 Innings each time.
The Boston Red Sox will counter by handing the ball to Jake Bennett who has an 8-6 record and 3.49 ERA in his fifteen starts in the rookie season in the Major League. However, Jake Bennett has not been quite at his top level since the All Star Break and the last six starts have ended with a 3-3 record, but a 5.29 ERA.
In fact, Jake Bennett has allowed at least three runs in all six of those starts, although the Red Sox will take some confidence from the fact he has been able to pitch into the 6th Inning five times.
Jake Bennett has made just one start against the New York Yankees, but held them to a single run into the 7th Inning and earned the decision win back in June.
Prediction
For much of the season, the Boston Red Sox have gotten the better of the New York Yankees, but the home team will take confidence from the battling win on Friday.
Both starting pitchers may not have too many Innings in them, which will mean turning back to the bullpens that performed well on Friday.
However, there is also the added situation of having to play a double header meaning some of those relievers will not be risked and Jake Bennett's recent outings suggest the New York Yankees could be in a stronger position to secure another victory.
