SC Freiburg have already played a couple of competitive matches this season and produced excellent performances.
They beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 5-1 in the DFB Cup last weekend after coming from behind, and before that they beat Motherwell 1-3 in Scotland in the Conference League play-off first leg.
Matthias Ginter scored twice in Scotland, while summer signing Keisuke Goto added a late third.
That gives Julian Schuster's side a useful fitness advantage, although the European schedule also means more minutes in the legs.
SC Freiburg finished 7th last season after reaching the Europa League final, so expectations are higher now. Derry Scherhant and Igor Matanović also impressed from the bench in the cup, giving SC Freiburg plenty of attacking options.
Werder Bremen
Werder Bremen have had a quieter build-up to their Bundesliga opener. They began their competitive campaign with a 3-0 DFB Cup win over Oberliga side Lüneburger SK Hansa. Jens Stage opened the scoring, while new signing Ludovit Reis also scored on his debut. Niclas Füllkrug returned to the club for a third spell and started the game, although he did not get on the scoresheet.
Daniel Thioune's side controlled the cup game last week without really going through the gears. That was enough against Lüneburg, but SC Freiburg will demand much more.
The predicted XI has Nicklas Füllkrug leading the attack, with Reis and Jens Stage in midfield, although Werder have a few absences, including Mitchell Weiser and Keke Topp.
The Betting Verdict
SC Freiburg have the recent head-to-head advantage. They have won the last four meetings with Werder Bremen, including a 5-0 victory in Freiburg last season.
That said, Werder Bremen won the previous meeting at the Europa-Park Stadion 3-1 in 2024, so this fixture has not always been one-way traffic.
SC Freiburg are the side I prefer here. They already have some competitive wins under their belt, they are at home and they have looked dangerous going forward.
The concern is the Conference League game in between. SC Freiburg have played another European fixture against Motherwell on Thursday evening, so there is a chance coach Schuster rotates or the team is a little less fresh than usual.
Still, Werder Bremen are stepping into their first competitive Bundesliga game under Thioune, and this is a tough place to start.
I expect SC Freiburg to have enough quality to get the points, although Werder Bremen can make this uncomfortable.
