Leeds United

Daniel Farke insisted his personal ambition is to keep helping Leeds United progress and so he expected the board to match that by backing him in the summer. That has largely happened and Leeds United may yet exploit the loan market to bolster the squad, while the start to the campaign suggests everything is pretty rosy in the Elland Road garden.

The form across the second half of the Premier League season would have made Leeds United outside contenders to return to European Football and everyone seems to be pulling in the same direction. Both domestic Cup competitions have to be seen as legitimate targets and Leeds United have begun this season with a couple of wins over Nottingham Forest in the Premier League and League Cup to boost confidence.

Leeds United needed a late goal to win at the City Ground in a closely contested Premier league game last weekend, but were much more comfortable when winning at the same ground in the League Cup Second Round. The home fans will always get behind the Leeds United team and the side finished with a 9-5-5 record here in the top flight last season as they begin the 2026/27 home schedule on Sunday.

Gabriel Gudmundsson is a doubt, while both Ilia Gruev and Wilfried Gnonto are hoping to be involved before the September international break.

Brentford

One of the grounds that Shakhtar Donetsk explored when looking for a home to host Champions League Football was the Gtech Community Stadium before settling for Stamford Bridge. However, the start made to this season under Keith Andrews suggests Brentford could bring European Football to this part of West London at the conclusion of this campaign behind their own merits.

The Bees finished a point behind Sunderland in 7th place and behind 8th placed Brighton on goal difference at the conclusion of last season, which meant missing out on the Europa League and Conference League respectively. However, it was a season of overachievement and Brentford have opened this campaign in such a fashion that fans will believe they can challenge for the best ever Premier League finish and best top flight finish since the late 1930s.

Brentford ended last season with a single win from the last 11 games played in all competitions and that was the main reason they failed to finish in the top eight. Some people may have been concerned of a hangover to carry into this campaign, but Brentford have crushed Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 in the Premier League and Birmingham City 1-6 in the League Cup to open up. The Bees have not won any of the last 5 away Premier League games.

Sepp van den Berg is missing, while Yegor Yarmoliuk is a doubt. A deal looks likely to be completed for El Hadji Malick Diouf, but that will need to be concluded before Friday midday if he is to be registered in time to feature on Sunday.

Head to Head

Both Premier League games between Brentford and Leeds United ended in draws last season.

Leeds United are unbeaten in 8 at home against Brentford, but 5 have ended in draws, including each of the last 3 at Elland Road.

Prediction

Last season, Leeds United and Brentford finished in the top ten of the second half Premier League table and there is every reason to believe both are set up to surpass the achievements of the 2025/26 season.

In fact, you could make an argument that Leeds United and Brentford are both capable of earning European Football at the conclusion of this campaign and nothing we have seen from the first week of the season would have weakened that argument.

Daniel Farke and Keith Andrews deserve a lot of credit for the respective jobs they are doing with these Football Clubs and both sets of players are going to be filled with confidence when they meet on Sunday at Elland Road.

Home advantage has to give Leeds United an edge, but the layers have given Brentford the respect they deserve and a really competitive fixture is the likely outcome.

It was the case when these two teams met last season.

Both Premier League fixtures ended in draws and the game at Elland Road was massively competitive with very little between the teams.

That certainly feels like it is going to be the case against and 5 of the last 8 times Leeds United have hosted Brentford have ended with the points shared out. Those matches have all been played since September 2015, while the last 3 at Elland Road have ended in stalemate, and 6 of the last 10 overall have ended that way.

After the results produced in the first week of the season, it would not be a surprise to see Leeds United and Brentford cancel one another out again and the draw looks a real possibility on Sunday afternoon.
