Wayne Hennessey is out in goal after damaging cruciate knee ligaments at the Stadium of Light. That means Dorus de Vries will make his Premier League debut as Hennessey's replacement in goal, with the recalled Carl Ikeme set to be on the bench.
Jamie O'Hara remains unavailable but Sebastien Bassong is back after suspension. Ronald Zubar and David Edwards are also pushing for starts. Matt Jarvis is set to return to the starting line-up in place of Anthony Forde, while Kevin Doyle could oust Sylvan Ebanks-Blake in attack.
