Sydney FC 3rd (WLWWW)
Sydney are sitting in 3rd position 6 points adrift of leaders Perth Glory at the halfway stage of the season.
Sydney have no problem going forward and are averaging 2 goals agame, but it's in defense where there is a clink in the armour, they do concede goals, Under previous coach Graham Arnold, Sydney were tight at the back, but it appears current manager Steve Corica's mantra is "we will score more than you", it can be nerve wrecking for the fans, but it does make for exciting football.
Sydney FC are undefeated in their last eight home Hyundai A-League games against the Newcastle Jets (W6, D2), only conceding goals in the last 2 meetings.
Alex Brosque has scored 7 goals in his last nine games against the Jets, and will want to add to his tally of 14. that is the highest number of goals he has scored against any other team in the A- league.
Sydney are without the services of Rhyan Grant, off with the socceroos at the Asian Cup, and Josh Brillante sits this one out with a suspension. Dutch import Jop van der Linden is missing from defence due to a hamstring.
Newcastle Jets 8th (LLDLW)
Last season there was not much between these 2 sides when they met, and they ended 2nd to Sydney FC on the table, but
they are an incredible 14 points behind Sydney at this stage of the season.
Coach Ernie Merrick has been around the traps a long time and will know how to prepare the team for this game, he will be pleased that Venezuelan striker Ronald Vargas returns from suspension and will return to the starting lineup to lead the attack. But he will have to shuffle the back line as Macedonian fullback Daniel Georgievski sits out a suspension due to picking up 5 yellow cards already this season.
Newcastle's problem this season is not being able to turn possession and promising build-up play into goals. The Jets have only scored at marginally a goal a game, and equal with the bottom team, the mariners.
The Betting Verdict
It was 1-1 in the Hunter when these two met earlier this season and this one should be just as tight. But now that Sydney FC have got over the loss to Perth 2 weeks ago, I can only see a win for the Sky blues.
I think Both teams will find the net as both teams have defensive issues, and the match ending Over 2.5 goals at ~$1.75 is fair.
Sydney FC will be back in the hunt for the title if they pick all 3 points up in this contest, and that might just be the incentive Sydney need to grab the win.
