They were rightly applauded for the effort and determination shown in the goalless draw with Manchester City, but Southampton reminded everyone why they are bottom of the Premier League table with just 12 points secured all season in their performance at Goodison Park. The 2-0 scoreline flatted Southampton in the last ever game at that famous old ground and there is plenty of work to do in the summer before the return to the Championship.
That work is going to be done by either Will Still or Danny Rohl if reports are to be believed, but Southampton's board will make that decision after the last game of the season. The Saints conclude the miserable campaign at St Mary's where they have a 1-3-14 record in the top flight after scoring 12 goals here all campaign.
Southampton have not won any of their last 14 games in all competitions and 11 of those fixtures have ended in defeat. Since beating Swansea City here in the FA Cup, Southampton have not won any of 9 home fixtures in all competitions. The Saints have managed to pick up a draw in half of their last 4 League games at St Mary's, including last time out against Manchester City.
Kyle Walker-Peters, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jan Bednarek are all hoping to be available for selection this weekend.
Arsenal
Some of the Arsenal fans might feel this has been a season of disappointment, but Mikel Arteta wanted to remind everyone of how much has been achieved after a third straight 2nd place finish was secured in the Premier League. There is no doubt that Arteta knows where his Arsenal team have come up short and his post-match interview on Sunday put the pressure on those above him to bring in the right players to add trophies to his time managing at the Emirates Stadium.
The narrow win over Newcastle United has secured Champions League Football again after Arsenal reached the Semi Final of that competition. It is the 14 draws in the Premier League that have cost Arsenal and the majority of those have been away from home where The Gunners have an 8-8-2 record in the top flight.
Arsenal had not won any of their previous 5 games in all competitions before getting the better of Newcastle United to secure 2nd place in the Premier League table. The side have won just 2 of their last 6 away games in all competitions, but Arsenal showed considerable fight to recover from 2-0 down in a 2-2 draw at Anfield in their last away Premier League game.
Mikel Merino is available after serving a ban, but both Jurrien Timber and William Saliba are doubts.
Head to Head
Arsenal came from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season.

Prediction
There is nothing much on the line for either Southampton or Arsenal in this final Premier League fixture and it could be one of the higher-scoring fixtures of the final day.
With nothing to lose, both teams can afford to play without pressure and that should allow the attacking players to have some success.
It will certainly help that both teams are likely missing some key defenders for this last game, although Arsenal are clearly expected to be able to call on the stronger performers in the attacking areas.
There may be some changes made by Mikel Arteta, especially having picked up the three points last weekend to secure 2nd place and another shot at the Champions League. That could mean the team is lacking some intensity for this game, but Arsenal still have players in the final third that will feel they have something to prove with the squad likely to bolstered in those positions in the summer.
Arsenal will be able to hurt Southampton if the latter are not able to produce much better than they did against Everton at Goodison Park last weekend.
Southampton will point to the goalless draw with Manchester City in their last home game as to what they can do when at their very best, but that has been so rare to see from them this season. There are some players that may believe that they will be targeted by clubs in the top flight, but the majority have lacked the quality needed and Arsenal can just underline that point by securing a relatively comfortable win on Sunday.
There are always some strange results on the final day with teams perhaps not as focused as they would usually be, but Arsenal can round out their campaign with a solid away victory and look to end this season with the third most away wins in the Division.
