VfB Stuttgart
The panic button is on in Stuttgart, after the team lost two of their first three Bundesliga games.
Last week’s match against SC Freiburg was an exact replica of the game last season. VfB Stuttgart took the 0-1 lead through Ermedin Demirovic (same as last season), but lost 3-1 (exactly like last season).
European games are also coming up for VfB Stuttgart, which means there is no time for a break, and they cannot neglect the Bundesliga; otherwise, they will be dragged near the bottom very early in the season.
So far, the Swabians have lost both away games, but won their only home game, 1-0 against Borussia Monchengladbach.
St.Pauli
St.Pauli has many reasons for satisfaction at this point. They have been continuously improving since their first season in the Bundesliga last year, and are recording much better results.
For comparison, St.Pauli opened last season with three straight Bundesliga defeats, and this season they are unbeaten after three rounds, winning twice and drawing once. That’s not accidental. The team is compact, and I expect them to be a stable Bundesliga side this season and probably in the next few as well.
Last weekend, St.Pauli won 2-1 at home against Augsburg, showing a commanding performance. That was also their third straight Bundesliga game this season, with them scoring at least twice.
Interestingly, St.Pauli won 0-1 away in Stuttgart last season, but lost their most recent match against their rivals also with 0-1 at home last May.
The Betting Verdict
History favors VfB Stuttgart in the duels against St.Pauli, with them winning 11, drawing 4, and losing only 3 duels against them.
VfB Stuttgart also won four of the last five played in Stuttgart, but lost the last one played last December.
VfB Stuttgart has a lot of games coming up on different fronts. Their coach, Hoeness, was critical after last week’s defeat, urging his players to wake up before it’s too late.
This game comes before their European duel against Celta Vigo, and I expect them to do much better than last week.
St.Pauli will certainly defend more here after going unbeaten in three games. A point would be excellent for them, although they will go for more perhaps through counter-attacks.
Still, I expect quality to prevail and VfB Stuttgart to record their second successive Bundesliga home win at fair odds.
