Werder Bremen
Werder Bremen’s Bundesliga record of one loss, one draw, and one defeat perhaps does not speak much, but we saw a pretty good Werder Bremen side in the last couple of weeks.
The 3-3 draw against Bayer Leverkusen was followed by a fantastic 0-4 away win last week against Borussia Monchengladbach, and in both those games, Werder Bremen looked excellent.
If we count the last few months of last season, Werder Bremen remained unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 Bundesliga matches, losing only to Eintracht Frankfurt during that period. They look stable and solid, so perhaps this could be a year when they get involved in the battle for European spots.
Besides collecting points, Werder Bremen’s recent matches also involved plenty of goals – there were 3+ goals in each of their most recent four games.
However, a very negative thing is their recent record against SC Freiburg, as Werder Bremen have won only once and suffered five defeats in their last six head-to-head duels against them. Especially painful was the most recent 5-0 defeat in Freiburg, played in February of this year.
SC Freiburg
After heavily losing against Augsburg and Koln in the first two rounds, SC Freiburg achieved their first win of the season last week, 3-1 against VfB Stuttgart. They were a goal down in that game, yet they won it, which should further improve their confidence in front of this match.
To me, SC Freiburg look weaker than last season, and they did not impress me at all in the opening Bundesliga matches.
Last week’s game was SC Freiburg’s sixth straight match ending with three or more goals scored.
SC Freiburg’s 19-year-old attacking midfielder, Johan Manzambi, received a red card in the last moments of the last game and is suspended.
The Betting Verdict
Werder Bremen left me a much bigger impression than SC Freiburg in recent weeks. They have only the Bundesliga to think about and seem to click well, so I consider them bigger favorites for three points here.
SC Freiburg has a looming European match against Basel to think about, and they have a limited squad. Some rotation is possible, and I expect them to play more defensively in this match.
Based on recent form and way of play, I suggest taking Werder Bremen to win the game at valuable odds.
