Tottenham Hotspur
Fans that are perhaps getting carried away by the start made under Thomas Frank should be wise enough to think back two years when Tottenham Hotspur did something very similar under Ange Postecoglou. Whispers of a potential title challenge had begun to get louder back then, but things fell apart for Tottenham Hotspur and everyone in October 2025 have to remain focused and take things game by game.
They will return to action in 3rd place in the Premier League table and just 2 points behind leaders, and rivals, Arsenal and the main ambition for Tottenham Hotspur is still to finish in the Champions League places. Things would have been even brighter for Spurs if they had a stronger record than the 1-1-1 one they have compiled at home so far this season.
Tottenham Hotspur are unbeaten in 7 games in all competitions since the surprising 0-1 defeat to Bournemouth, although it should be noted that 3 of those matches have ended in draws. Following that home defeat to The Cherries, Tottenham Hotspur had beaten Villarreal and Doncaster Rovers in front of the home fans, but they needed a late goal to earn a 1-1 draw with Wolves most recently.
Radu Dragusin and Kolo Muani are both hoping to be a part of the squad. Both Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski are unlikely to be rushed back, but are closing in on returns of their own.
Aston Villa
There is no disguising the incredibly slow start made to the new season by Aston Villa, but Unai Emery's men were motoring going into the October international break. The manager will be hoping his team can pick up from where they left off two weeks ago, although this is a tough opening Premier League fixture after the fortnight of internationals.
The upturn in results has pushed Aston Villa up into 13th place in the Premier League table and they have 9 points on the board, which means they are firmly in touch with the clubs that will be chasing European Football at the end of the season. The Villans will need to improve the 0-2-1 away record if they are to finish as high as expected, especially after dropping some early points at Villa Park.
Aston Villa are not only unbeaten in 5 games in all competitions, but they have won 4 in a row to really build up some momentum and confidence. The side had not won any of 5 away games in all competitions before snapping that run in a 0-2 win at Feyenoord in the Europa League. Aston Villa have drawn their last 2 away Premier League games at Everton and Sunderland.
Tyrone Mings, Emi Buendia, Youri Tielemens and Ollie Watkins are all hoping to be available. This would give Unai Emery the squad depth he has felt was missing earlier in the season, especially with Amadou Onana being back in action.
Head to Head
Both Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur beat the other at home in the Premier League, while the former also beat Spurs at Villa Park in the FA Cup.
Tottenham Hotspur were 4-1 winners at home last season and snapped a run of consecutive defeats to Aston Villa in front of their own fans.
Prediction
Both of these teams were producing positive results in the matches played between the last two international breaks and Thomas Frank and Unai Emery will be hoping the October break has not snapped any momentum.
Tottenham Hotspur have drawn 3 of their last 5 games so have not been nearly in the same run of form as Aston Villa, who have won 4 in a row.
However, Thomas Frank's immediate impact with his Tottenham Hotspur squad has been evident from the opening matches of the campaign and this is a team playing with real confidence. Some key players are still absent, but Frank has options and he is finding a decent enough balance between Champions League and Premier League commitments.
The results have been stronger than the overall performances in all honesty and Thomas Frank has spoken openly about still trying to find the right balance between attack and defence. This is a team that have been much more defensively sound compared with last season under Ange Postecoglou, which was never going to be too difficult a task, but Tottenham Hotspur have not been creating a lot of quality in the final third and have been thankful to some quality finishing.
They are facing an Aston Villa team that may be bolstered by players returning from injury and one that has found real momentum thanks to the wins produced before the last international break.
In saying that, there is still room for improvement and Aston Villa have not always been the most consistent of travellers, which could hold them back here.
Historically this is a fixture that has produced plenty of goals.
8 of the last 10 overall have ended with at least three goals shared out, and that is also the case in 6 of the last 7 Premier League games hosted by Tottenham Hotspur.
This one on Sunday could be a little different and that is mainly down to the two teams still finding their absolute best in the final third.
Tottenham Hotspur have only scored 2 goals in the last 3 home games played against Bournemouth, Villarreal and Wolves (they did score three in a League Cup tie against Doncaster Rovers of League One during that run). In those matches mentioned, Spurs have conceded just twice too and Thomas Frank's approach could lead to another tight fixture.
And it is not as if Aston Villa matches have been free-flowing attacking outings in away games played this season- none of the 5 away games played in all competitions have finished with more than two goals shared out.
At odds against, backing this fixture to go against recent trends when Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa have played one another is the play.
An early goal can change everything in terms of approach taken by teams, but the defences could still be largely on top and back under 2.5 goals looks the right approach to take.
