Eintracht Frankfurt
Fans of a certain age may recall Eintracht Frankfurt reaching the European Cup Final back in 1960- Sir Alex Ferguson recalled the game played at Hampden Park, Glasgow as the German team were beaten 7-3 by a rampant Real Madrid. In more recent times, Eintracht Frankfurt have been competing in one of the competitions below the Champions League, although they did win the Europa League as recently as 2022.
On Match Day 1 of the Champions League, Eintracht Frankfurt must have thought things were easy as they crushed Galatasaray 5-1 at home, but the exact reverse of that scoreline occurred on Match Day 2 in a thumping loss at Atletico Madrid. Earning a spot in the Knock Out Rounds remains the main ambition for Eintracht Frankfurt, although the fixture list looks a tough one to manage.
Eintracht Frankfurt have won 1 of their last 5 games in all competitions since that win over Turkish Champions Galatasaray, while they had lost 3 of 4 before a 2-2 draw at Freiburg this past weekend. The last 2 home fixtures played have ended in defeats to Union Berlin (3-4) and Bayern Munich (0-3) and that has left Eintracht Frankfurt in 7th place in the Bundesliga.
Liverpool
Most Liverpool fans would have accepted that the late goals being scored to turn draws into wins was unsustainable, but not many would have predicted they were about to watch the English Champions lose 4 matches in a row in all competitions. The latest would have really hurt as Manchester United won at Anfield for the first time in almost ten years and Arne Slot will be looking for a positive reaction to regain some lost momentum.
Last season Liverpool topped the Champions League Group, although Slot was not happy with a draw that saw them pitted against Paris Saint-Germain in the Last 16. With that in mind, the manager made it clear that he would not put as much stock into finishing top again, but a place in the first eight places has to be considered important to avoid an extra Knock Out tie in February. After two matches, Liverpool are 17th in the Champions League standings with 3 points on the board.
Liverpool's 4 losses in a row have all come in narrow defeats and 3 of those have been in 2-1 scorelines. The loss on Sunday was the only one suffered at Anfield in that run, but that does mean Liverpool travel to Germany off the back of 3 consecutive away defeats in all competitions against Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea.
Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister may not be used, while the manager is likely to make further changes to freshen things up. Hugo Ekitike scored 26 goals in 64 games for Eintracht Frankfurt and may be asked to lead the line against his former team-mates.
Head to Head
Eintracht Frankfurt and Liverpool met in the First Round of the 1972/73 UEFA Cup and it was the latter that won 2-0 on aggregate.
However, the fixture hosted by Eintracht Frankfurt ended goalless in the Second Leg in September 1972.
Prediction
There are plenty of questions being asked of Liverpool in England after a poor run moved on another game, but this is an opportunity to at least bounce back and put a more positive headline on the back pages.
The likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike should be comfortable playing against a Bundesliga club and Liverpool are still creating enough chances in the final third to be considered dangerous.
That has to be especially the case for an Eintracht Frankfurt team that have lost back to back home games and conceded 7 goals in those defeats.
An additional commitment of playing top level Champions League Football alongside the Bundesliga is challenging for Eintracht Frankfurt, who are not that experienced at this level. They did reach the Quarter Final of the Europa League last season, but there is a significant upgrade of opponent once you move into the Champions League and Eintracht Frankfurt have been in erratic form.
Dino Toppmoller has a growing reputation but he is at a club that will sell key players and someone like Hugo Ekitike can remind the home fans of his qualities.
Nothing is coming easily for Liverpool at the moment and Eintracht Frankfurt will have joy getting forward against this opponent, but defensively there are big questions. The English Champions are still creating big chances in the final third and that can be the case in a winning effort on Wednesday as Liverpool snap a poor run of defeats.
