Wolves
The board are clearly behind manager Vitor Pereira having given him a new contract last month, but they may have been hoping it would also have given the Wolves squad a boost in order to produce positive results. The League Cup run has been solid enough with a Fourth Round tie coming up, but Wolves need Premier League wins now.
A 2-0 defeat at Sunderland last week is a reminder that Wolves may not be able to rely on the three Promoted clubs struggling as they have in each of the last two seasons. It is also a defeat that leaves Wolves bottom of the Premier League table and they remain the only top flight club without a League win. This feels like a big game for Wolves who have a 0-1-3 record at Molineux in the Premier League.
Wolves have beaten both West Ham United and Everton at home in the League Cup this season, and they had drawn 2 Premier League games in succession before the disappointing 2-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light. Only a very late Brighton goal prevented Wolves from securing a 1-0 win when last playing here in the Premier League, but it also means the side have not won any of the last 6 League games played at Molineux and lost 4 times.
Hee-Chan Hwang and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde are both hoping to be passed fit for the home team.
Burnley
Scott Parker will know that every week is going to be a tough test for his Burnley team, but he has to be proud of the hard work that is being put in. They were rewarded with an important home victory over Leeds United last Saturday and that has just given Burnley some momentum as we begin to think about the festive fixtures, which is a time when the League games come thick and fast.
Three points secured against another of their fellow Promoted clubs has pulled Burnley up into 17th place in the Premier League table and 3 points clear of the relegation zone. However, all of the League points secured this season have been at Turf Moor and Burnley have a 0-0-4 away record where they have scored 4 goals and conceded 13.
Burnley had not won any of 6 games in all competitions and they had been beaten in 5 of those fixtures, but snapped that run in the win over Leeds United last weekend. The concern for Scott Parker is that his team have conceded at least twice in losing all 4 away Premier League games played this season, although it should be noted that those fixtures have all been against clubs that currently occupy the top 11 League places.
Lyle Foster could be available to travel with the squad this weekend.
Head to Head
Wolves beat Burnley 2-0 here in the League Cup in August 2024.
They had not won any of 3 home League games against Burnley, but Wolves ended that run in December 2023 in a 1-0 victory.
Prediction
The calendar will be moving into November the next time either of these teams will play in the Premier League and so it does feel a little early to call this a 'relegation six pointer'.
However, if you were to take a poll in the Wolves and Burnley fanbases, the expectation is likely going to be that both will be fighting to avoid the drop later in the campaign and so the points on offer will feel massively important.
You really have to believe that is the case for Wolves and Vitor Pereira.
The board have faith in the manager, but losing to Promoted clubs Sunderland and Burnley in back to back weeks is going to erode some confidence. Wolves have already suffered a big home loss to Leeds United and the new contract signed by the manager last month will not mean a great deal if his team cannot start finding League wins.
Relegation would be a huge financial hit on Wolves and so the board's patience could soon run out and that puts pressure on the manager and the home players.
Scott Parker is unlikely to be dismissed even if Burnley were to face an immediate relegation, but the manager will be keen to show that he can be more than someone who merely drags clubs out of the Championship. Previous stops at Fulham and Bournemouth have perhaps given Parker that reputation, but he has to be glad with the points secured already.
Turf Moor is proving to be a tough place to visit, but the real key for Scott Parker and the players is to bring that same intensity away from home.
Nothing has been wrong with the work ethic away from home, but Burnley have been conceding far too many goals. This is not a team that is going to outscore opponents very often and so Parker has to work on the defensive side, although he may point out that games at Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Manchester City and Aston Villa would be tough for most clubs, never mind a newly Promoted one.
That won't fly this week though and Burnley have shown they can be quite stubborn, although they have yet to really get going in the final third. Quality finishes have helped, but there has not been a consistency in the chance creation and this is likely to be a tense fixture between two clubs who know the importance of the points on offer.
The layers are taking no chances with the over/under 2.5 goal market- the under is massively odds on.
A narrow lean is with Wolves, but they have to prove they can win games having failed against Leeds United and Sunderland and so the best play may be backing at least one of the teams to fail to score.
That would be a winner in 5 of the last 6 games between Burnley and Wolves, including the last 4 at Molineux.
Both teams have been struggling in the final third in terms of chances being created and it looks the best approach to take in this battle at the bottom.
