A Sports Betting Pick by Stu

North Queensland Cowboys v Redcliffe Dolphins
Rugby League : Australia : NRL Season 2026
Saturday 6th June 2026 - KO 1930 AEST

North Queensland Cowboys

The Cowboys were heavily criticised after their disappointing performance against Canberra, where coach Todd Payten questioned his side's attitude, defensive effort and physicality.

After missing 52 tackles and conceding far too easily through the middle, a much-improved performance is expected in front of their home crowd. North Queensland's attack has not been the issue. They have scored 106 points across their last three home matches and generally look comfortable when playing with momentum in Townsville. The challenge will be whether they can tighten their defence against one of the NRL's most in-form attacking outfits.

North Queensland are 9th in a log jam with 6 other teams on the same competition points, 8-5 record and need to win here to stay within touching distance of the top 8.

There are reasons for optimism. Captain Reuben Cotter returns after being rested, bringing leadership, line speed and defensive steel back into the middle third. Veteran forward Jason Taumalolo has rediscovered some of his best form this season and continues to provide strong yardage through the middle, while fullback Scott Drinkwater remains the Cowboys most dangerous attacking weapon.

Redcliffe Dolphins

The Dolphins arrive fresh from a bye and Coach Kristian Woolf has his side playing some of the most exciting football in the competition, winning four straight matches and averaging 33.5 points per game during that run. Their attack has become increasingly difficult to contain thanks to a spine loaded with speed and creativity.

Redcliffe are placed 7th also on 16 competition points off a 6-5 record, their 2 byes contributing to their lofty position.
The Dolphins biggest boost comes from the return of several stars. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Herbie Farnworth, Kodi Nikorima, Selwyn Cobbo and Max Plath all bolster an already dangerous lineup.

At the centre of everything remains halfback Isaiya Katoa. The young playmaker has emerged as one of the competition's elite organisers, combining a mature kicking game with excellent vision and composure. Around him, Tabuai-Fidow's speed and support play make the Dolphins a constant threat whenever they generate quick ruck speed.

The Dolphins forward pack may not carry the same reputation as some of the competition heavyweights, but players like Thomas Flegler, Morgan Knowles and Tom Gilbert have helped create a far more resilient middle rotation than many expected entering the season.

Odds

The Cowboys start as underdogs at home, $2.35 to $1.60, the line is -4.5 points and combined points 54.5

The Betting Verdict

The Cowboys have the advantage of home ground, the return of Cotter, and should be highly motivated after last week's reality check. Historically, Townsville has been a difficult road trip for visiting sides, particularly when North Queensland start fast and get their crowd involved.

The Dolphins, however, arguably enter the match in better overall form. Their attack looks more settled, their spine is fully fit again, and they appear capable of scoring points from almost anywhere on the field. The return of Farnworth and Tabuai-Fidow significantly increases their strike power.

Overall H2H 2-4 ,from the 6 matches played. Every match these teams have played has been high scoring, 54, 44, 61, 54, 58 and 67 making the combined points total here of 54.5 likely to be exceeded.

The key battle will be through the middle. If Cotter, Taumalolo and Hess can dominate possession and slow down Katoa's influence, the Cowboys should create enough opportunities through Drinkwater to win. If the Dolphins generate quick ruck speed and allow Katoa to play on the front foot, their outside backs could have a huge night.

Recent form suggests both teams are comfortable scoring points, while defensive consistency has occasionally been an issue for each side. That points toward an open contest rather than a low-scoring grind.
Prediction:

This feels like one of the hardest games of the round to confidently predict, The Cowboys should score points at home, the Dolphins are averaging over 30 points per game during their current winning streak, and both backlines possess enough strike power to turn half chances into tries. Dolphins by 6+ in an entertaining, high-quality contest.

The Pick :

North Queensland 24-34 Redcliffe Dolphins
