We love cup matches because of thrillers and drama, and that’s what we got in St.Pauli’s cup game last Tuesday evening.
Despite their horrific displays in the Bundesliga, St.Pauli looked like a different side in the cup match against TSG Hoffenheim. It was 1-1 after 90 minutes, then 2-2 after 120 (St.Pauli scored in the 120th minute), and then St.Pauli won 8-7 on penalties in a shootout with 18 penalties!
That win and progress was very welcomed in St.Pauli, who had previously lost five Bundesliga matches in a row. In addition to losing, St.Pauli also failed to score in their last three games, which is a problem.
St.Pauli has seven points, four more than their opponents, Borussia Mönchengladbach. Their home displays have been poor in recent weeks, with them losing both of their last two home games against Bayer Leverkusen and TSG Hoffenheim.

Borussia Mönchengladbach got a sigh of relief in the midweek cup game. They finally won 3-1 against Karlsruher SC, a much-needed win, considering they are on a horrific Bundesliga run of 15 straight winless games!
I mentioned in the last preview that interim coach Eugen Polanski has three games to save his job. He took the first step by beating Karlsruher SC in the cup. The next two Bundesliga games, where he must get points, are against St. Pauli and Koln.
Borussia Mönchengladbach is the only winless team in the Bundesliga this season, drawing three and losing five of their eight games.
They did well against St.Pauli last season, beating them 2-0 at home and playing 1-1 away in Hamburg.
The Betting Verdict
Both sides progressed in the cup, but St.Pauli played a really, really long game that ended very late Tuesday night.
Borussia Mönchengladbach is in slightly better spirits after winning convincingly in the cup, but the pressure is very high now on them to get their first Bundesliga win.
This could be a tense, nervous duel between two sides winless for a long time, but I would go with Borussia Mönchengladbach to remain unbeaten in this match.
