They became World Champions for the fourth time in 2014, but the last two World Cup appearances have ended in consecutive Group Stage exits. There have been signs that Germany are improving and returning to the top table of international football, but they have made harder work of this Qualifying Group than many would have anticipated.
Despite that, Germany will go into the final Qualifier as big favourites to earn their spot at the next World Cup Finals. Avoiding defeat will take Germany through ahead of Slovakia, who will be dropped into the Play Off, although there will be some pressure as long as this game is level with the Germans well aware that a second defeat to this opponent would mean finish behind them in the section.
Germany have not really impressed and they have had to battle very hard to earn away wins over Northern Ireland and Luxembourg, although those victories do mean they have 4 in a row. Both home Qualifiers in this World Cup Qualifying Group have been won, but Germany had not won any of the 3 previous home games played.
Slovakia
Two goals were ruled out by VAR and Slovakia fans must have been wondering if it was going to be one of those kind of nights in the last home Qualifier against Northern Ireland. A draw would have still kept them in with a chance of topping this Group, but the pressure would have been built on Slovakia knowing a win and a strong Northern Ireland win would have meant elimination.
Those concerns were wiped away thanks to a late winner and Slovakia have confirmed at least a spot in the Play Off as they look to reach the World Cup Finals for the first time since 2010. They are partly in that position thanks to a 2-0 win over Germany at home in the opening Qualifier, but Slovakia will need another victory over this opponent to finish top of the section and to begin to book a stay in North America for the next World Cup Finals.
Slovakia will remain in League C of the Nations League after a loss to Slovenia back in March, but they have won 4 of the 5 Qualifiers played in this Group. The exception is the 2-0 away defeat at Windsor Park against Northern Ireland, and Slovakia have now lost 4 of the last 6 away games played in all competitions and have a single win in that time.

Slovakia have a surprising record against Germany since becoming an independent nation- they have met 12 times and Slovakia have won 4 of those matches, including the 2-0 win in this Qualifying Group.
Germany had won the first 4 home games against Slovakia.
However, the most recent meeting was in an international friendly played in May 2016 and Slovakia won 1-3.
Prediction
It is a 'winner takes all' final World Cup Qualifier in this Group.
You have to give Germany the edge knowing a draw means they will top the section and guarantee a spot in North America next summer, but they will have to be careful.
And as long as this game is level, Slovakia are going to be dangerous and the fans and players could be a little edgy, which is something Germany will want to avoid.
They have not really played up to a really high level in the Group- they may have won 4 Qualifiers in a row, but Germany have not really convinced in any of those.
Being at home is an advantage though and especially as Slovakia have not been nearly as strong on their travels. The 2-0 defeat in Northern Ireland underlines the point and Slovakia have not been facing teams nearly as strong as this Germany team can be in recent away games.
Slovakia will take considerable belief out of the 2-0 win over Germany, but the latter are unlikely to be caught out a second time in this Group.
If they can get in front, Germany may be able to pick Slovakia off on the counter and they may do just enough to cover this Asian Handicap line.
