German Bundesliga
2026-05-21 - Wolfsburg vs SC Paderborn
A Sports Betting Pick by Niko
Football; Germany: Bundesliga Promotion/Relegation Playoff - 01st Leg
Volkswagen Arena - Wolfsburg
Thursday, 21st May 2026 - kickoff 20:30 CET
Wolfsburg
This was a largely dismal Bundesliga season for Wolfsburg, always lingering near the relegation zone.
They changed 3 head coaches this season and just barely avoided a direct drop under Dieter Hecking, finishing with 2 wins and 2 draws in their last 5 Bundesliga games. They secured the promotion/relegation playoff spot on the final day, giving them one last chance to save themselves.
However, we should not forget that Wolfsburg finished this Bundesliga season as the worst home team! They won only 2 of their 17 home games (11 defeats), and failed to win any of their last 6 games in their stadium (5 losses).
SC Paderborn
2.Bundesliga season 2025/26 ended in a thrilling fashion, as expected. SC Paderborn had the least chance of finishing 3rd going into the final day, yet they did it!
Their 0-2 away win against solid SV Darmstadt 98, together with Hannover 96's shocking 3-3 home draw against Nurnberg, saw SC Paderborn climb to third.
They deserved to be in this position, considering they spent almost the whole season in or near the top 3. SC Paderborn played very attacking football, and averaged around two goals per match this season.
SC Paderborn also finished the season as the second-best away team. They went unbeaten in 5 of their last 6 trips (3 wins, 2 draws), only losing to the new Bundesliga side SV Elversberg.
The Betting Verdict
These two cities are separated by only 200 kilometres, so regional pride is also at stake.
Wolfsburg have been more successful in recent head-to-head duels, recording three wins and two draws in the last 5 competitive duels against SC Paderborn. However, SC Paderborn won the friendly game against Wolfsburg in Wolfsburg 1-2 last September during an international break.
SC Paderborn was promoted to the German Bundesliga in 2014 and then in 2019, and in both cases, they were immediately relegated in the following season. Now they have a better squad, better finances, better organisation, so perhaps they could go past Wolfsburg and return to the top league.
Wolfsburg is no stranger to relegation playoff matches. They most recently overcame Eintracht Braunschweig and Holstein Kiel in two consecutive seasons – 2017 and 2018. Interestingly, Wolfsburg has never dropped out of the Bundesliga since first entering in 1996.
Many are siding with Wolfsburg, but I don’t see them as the big favourites. This is the first of the two games, with the second rematch coming up this Monday.
I believe the second duel will decide who goes up/down, so this one will be open.
SC Paderborn is not a defensive side, and they will come to score. There were 28 goals scored between the sides in their last 6 duels, and I believe that trend will continue.
My recommended bet here is taking both teams to score, which pays pretty decently.
The Pick :
