Burnley
Scott Parker will be the first to say that Burnley cannot accept losing matches, even if the opposition have been set as favourites to beat them, and he will want his squad to snap the poor recent run. Losing touch with the teams above them in the Premier League table will be a real concern for the manager and the board if Burnley cannot start picking up more points with a couple of relegation rivals showing real improvement under new managers.
Results this past weekend have left Burnley in 19th place in the Premier League table after Parker's team conceded two late goals in a 3-1 defeat at Brentford. There is suddenly a 7 point gap between 15th placed Fulham and Burnley in their current position so it feels important to earn a positive result this Wednesday when playing at Turf Moor where the side have a 2-1-3 record in the top flight.
Burnley scored very late to beat Wolves 2-3 at Molineux, but they have lost all 4 Premier League games played since that victory to drop back into the relegation zone. They have lost the last 2 home Premier League games by the same 0-2 scoreline, but those were against Arsenal and Chelsea.
An unchanged squad should be available to Scott Parker, although he may choose to freshen things up after the loss to Brentford.
Crystal Palace
There were reports back in September that Oliver Glasner had warned the Crystal Palace board that he would leave the club if another key player was sold. That has been cited as the main reason Marc Guehi's deadline day move to Liverpool was cancelled, but there has been an undercurrent of frustration bubbling beneath the surface for a manager who is out of contract at Selhurst Park at the end of the season.
The fans are likely to be behind Oliver Glasner who made his feelings clear following the defeat to Manchester United on Sunday- he has suggested the board made a big mistake by saving rather than investing in the summer transfer window and feels that will be the reason Crystal Palace will not have as many successes this season as they could have. The Eagles are 9th in the Premier League table and have a 3-1-2 away record this season.
Crystal Palace have won 1 of the last 4 games played in all competitions and have suffered consecutive 2-1 defeats to Strasbourg and Manchester United, despite leading in both. They have lost 3 of the last 5 away games played in all competitions, but Crystal Palace did win their last Premier League game on their travels at Wolves.
Borna Sosa is expected to miss out, while Ismaila Sarr picked up an injury against Manchester United which may see him miss several weeks for Crystal Palace as he is soon to leave for the African Cup of Nations.
Head to Head
Crystal Palace secured two comfortable wins over Burnley when the teams last met in the 2023/24 Premier League season.
Burnley had not lost the previous 2 home games against this opponent before the 0-2 defeat in November 2023.
Prediction
An extremely challenging period of football is coming up for Crystal Palace with the team being involved in the Conference League Group Stage as well as the League Cup Quarter Final. These matches are played in and around the Premier League schedule and Oliver Glasner's team looked a little wary on Sunday as the lack of squad depth is beginning to play a part in the results.
Oliver Glasner was hugely frustrated on Sunday- his team dominated the first half, but struggled to contain Manchester United from set pieces and ran out of steam. That frustration only increased with the news about the injury picked up by Ismaila Sarr and Crystal Palace cannot do any business until January, which the manager stated is 'too late'.
Crystal Palace have qualities that make them worthy of respect, but the loss of Sarr is going to hurt the attacking side of the game.
Defensively they are well organised and they showed in the win at Molineux that they can produce enough quality in the final third to beat those further down the League table. However, that was a win produced out of the November international break, and Crystal Palace have lost 3 of the last 5 away games in all competitions with little recovery time.
They have around twenty hours fewer than Burnley to prepare for this game and Scott Parker will be encouraged by the way his team have played at Turf Moor to believe they can earn a positive result.
Back to back 0-2 defeats to Arsenal and Chelsea can be forgiven, but Burnley continue to be much more resilient at home and they can do that again on Wednesday and especially if the Crystal Palace legs continue to look heavy.
The key for Scott Parker will be making sure his team are not out of the game at 60 minutes- if they can do that, Burnley should have a bit more energy to find a positive result and they are capable of doing that. Only Arsenal have won with some relative comfort at this ground in the top flight this season and that has to be considered with Crystal Palace looking mighty short at odds on to win.
You still have to fear some of the qualities that Crystal Palace have, even without Ismaila Sarr, but the key for the home team is to make things tough for a team that have been playing a lot of football of late. That has seen Crystal Palace concede some late goals as the legs get heavier and Burnley can be backed with a start to avoid a defeat, while a one goal defeat on this Asian line will return half the stake.
