Leeds United
Reports have been suggesting that the Leeds United board have been drawing up a list of potential replacements for manager Daniel Farke in a bid to turn around the decline in League form. It would perhaps be harsh on the manager, but Leeds United thought about replacing him after Farke had taken them back into the Premier League and there are clearly some in the boardroom who feel the team are underachieving.
Everyone is aiming for the same goal of keeping Leeds United in the Premier League and Daniel Farke has given himself a bit of breathing room by guiding the team to an important 3-1 win over Chelsea. They may not finish this round of fixtures outside of the bottom three (West Ham United play on Thursday), but Leeds United have kept in touch with Nottingham Forest and Elland Road should be buzzing again on Saturday in another fixture to be played under the lights.
Leeds United had won 1 of the previous 7 Premier League games, but the pressure had really built up around Daniel Farke because the team had lost 6 of those matches. Beating Chelsea on Wednesday has offered him a reprieve and does mean Leeds United have won 2 of the last 3 League games played at Elland Road.
Sean Longstaff and Daniel James are going to be missing.
Liverpool
Another manager feeling the pressure is going to be standing in the away dugout on Saturday and Arne Slot needs his Liverpool team to find some momentum and consistency. Winning on Saturday will make it feel like the Champions are moving out of a sticky run, but dropping more Premier League points could make those in the Liverpool boardroom feel all the edgier.
They did win the Premier League title unexpectedly last season, but no one could have anticipated Liverpool being 11 points behind leaders Arsenal in early December having spent so much in the summer transfer window. The Reds have a 3-0-4 away record in the Premier League as they prepare for another big test in Yorkshire.
Liverpool had lost 3 in a row either side of the November international break, but they have beaten West Ham United and drawn with Sunderland over the last seven days. The win in East London last Sunday ended a run of 4 straight away Premier League defeats and was also Liverpool's first away clean sheet since September.
Conor Bradley could be available for selection on Saturday, while Arne Slot has some big decisions to make after placing Mo Salah on the bench for a second game in a row. Alexander Isak struggled on Wednesday and could be replaced in the starting lineup, while Milos Kerkez could also be restored at left back.
Head to Head
When Leeds United were last in the Premier League in the 2022/23 season, both them and Liverpool won away fixtures against the other.
Liverpool have won their last 2 visits to Elland Road by 0-3 and 1-6 scores.
Prediction
Playing under the lights at Elland Road can only serve as an inspiration for Leeds United with the fans offering up a big atmosphere for them to compete.
That was all on display as Leeds United took a 2-0 lead into half time against Chelsea on Wednesday, although the team selection from the visiting team clearly underestimated the challenge ahead.
With both of these managers under pressure, it is very unlikely that Daniel Farke and Arne Slot are going to be taking any 'chances' with team selection and that should mean a good game of football for the neutral.
Leeds United have been very good going forward at home and been unfortunate to lose to Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa here. One of the clear issues is the lack of a striker who can consistently find the back of the net and they needed some mistakes and a great strike to score three times against Chelsea.
On recent evidence, Leeds United will certainly feel there are going to be mistakes on which they can capitalise on Saturday when hosting a Liverpool team that are seemingly being punished for every bit of lost concentration.
It was the case again on Wednesday when a Virgil Van Dijk error was followed by the ball taking a big deflection off of the Dutchman on the way to giving Sunderland a lead at Anfield.
Arne Slot has to be pleased with the desire of his team to fight back and earn a draw, which shows they are still playing for him, but he is keen for his team to make a faster start. More changes are expected in the forward areas to just freshen things up with the likes of Hugo Ekitike and Mo Salah hoping for starts, but Liverpool need to find a way to strengthen up mentally and physically.
All of that will be put to the test on Saturday, but the win at West Ham United shows what Liverpool are still capable of when they are avoiding critical mistakes.
This is a fixture they can win, although Leeds United are going to offer a stern examination of the visiting team.
However, Leeds United looked a little shaky when Chelsea scored on Wednesday and they have been the same against the stronger teams hosted. You have to believe they come out at 100 miles per hour, but if Liverpool can just avoid getting themselves into a hole like Chelsea did, The Reds can win a high-scoring game at Elland Road.
