Köln started their return to the Bundesliga in promising fashion. They collected 14 points from their opening nine matches and looked comfortable in mid-table during the early months of the season. Since then, however, things have slowed down considerably.

Across their last 15 Bundesliga games, Köln have managed only 10 points, which has dragged them closer to the relegation fight. They now sit 13th in the table – their lowest position of the campaign, and only two points separate them from the relegation play-off spot.

Last week, Köln lost 2-0 to Augsburg, their fourth straight winless match, and a third defeat in that span.

Goals have also been harder to come by recently, and against stronger opponents, Köln have often struggled to control games for long stretches. That makes this weekend’s clash particularly tricky against one of the Bundesliga’s most consistent attacking sides.

Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund come into this match after a rare difficult spell. Niko Kovac’s side suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time under his management, losing to Atalanta in the Champions League before falling 3-2 against Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga last weekend.

Despite those setbacks, Borussia Dortmund remains in a strong position domestically. They still hold a six-point advantage over TSG Hoffenheim and VfB Stuttgart, who are third and fourth, and their overall Bundesliga form has been excellent.

One of the biggest reasons is their attacking strength. Borussia Dortmund have scored at least twice in each of their last 10 Bundesliga matches.

They have also travelled well this season. BVB are unbeaten in their last six away league games, picking up three wins and three draws in that stretch.

The Betting Verdict

Köln have lost their last four meetings with BVB, scoring only once, while Borussia Dortmund have netted 12 goals across those victories. Overall, Borussia Dortmund have lost just two of the last ten clashes between the sides.

Köln are fighting for Bundesliga survival and will likely try to keep things tight, but Borussia Dortmund’s attack has been extremely reliable all season. Given their scoring run and strong away form, the visitors look the more likely winners here.

Köln might keep it competitive for a while, but BVB scoring two goals again feels very realistic. An away win looks good to me, something like 1-2 or 1-3.
