Arsenal

It was an incredibly chastening week for the English Premier League in the Champions League, but it is the current League leaders who are best positioned to make it through to the Quarter Final of that competition. Mikel Arteta's team were far from their best on Wednesday and needed a controversial officiating decision to earn a 1-1 draw in Leverkusen, but that does make Arsenal strong favourites to progress in the competition.

The Gunners are playing before their main title rivals this weekend after the schedule had to be altered following the Champions League Last 16 fixture release and they have an opportunity to move 10 points clear of Manchester City, albeit having played two more games. That will be the main focus for Arsenal on Saturday afternoon back at the Emirates Stadium where they have an 11-2-1 record in the Premier League.

Arsenal have watched rivals falter, but they are are unbeaten in 12 games in all competitions even if the winning run came to an end at Bayer Leverkusen during the week. In recent weeks, Arsenal have been playing a lot of away games, but they will feel better being back in their own home where they have won 5 in a row in all competitions since losing 2-3 to Manchester United in January.

Martin Odegaard and Leandro Trossard are hoping to return to the squad sooner than later, but in the main the Arsenal squad are in decent health. The bigger decision may be thinking of a team that is capable of winning this game, while also having one eye on the Champions League Last 16 Second Leg coming up just days later.

Everton

The ambition of David Moyes is trying to get Everton back into European competition where he feels a club of this stature belongs, but the manager and the squad will have been grateful to have had a number of days of rest and recovery between Premier League fixtures. The disappointing early exit in the FA Cup has allowed Moyes and the squad to travel abroad for some warm weather over the last several days and the manager will be hoping his team are recharged for a big push over the next two months.

Three points were earned last time out against Burnley and that has moved Everton up into 8th place in the Premier League table and only 5 points out of the top five positions. Earning a return to the Champions League sounds fanciful, but Everton are in a position to challenge for European Football and bring a very respectable 7-3-4 away record to North London on Saturday afternoon.

Everton lost consecutive Premier League games last month, but they have bounced back to win 2 in a row in the top flight and have only lost those 2 fixtures from the last 10 games played in all competitions. Those defeats have also been at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and Everton are actually unbeaten in 6 away Premier League games and have won 4 times in that run.

Seamus Coleman and Carlos Alcaraz are close to returns, but this weekend may come too soon for the latter. Jarrad Branthwaite decided to stay in Merseyside rather than join the squad for warm weather training as he continues to rebuild to full strength.

Head to Head

A Penalty was enough to earn Arsenal a 0-1 win at Hill Dickinson Stadium back in December.

Arsenal had won 3 in a row at home against Everton, but were held to a goalless draw here last season.

Prediction

No one is going to place this Arsenal 2026 team alongside Brazil 1970 or Barcelona 2011 when it comes to the eye-pleasing performances, but how many supporters will care if they continue winning games?

Those critics will sharpen the knives if Arsenal fail to pick up the big prizes, but they are best placed to do that out of all of the top flight clubs.

Mikel Arteta is refusing to get involved in war of words with anyone who is criticising his Arsenal team and the focus this week is to maintain a strong grip on the destiny of the Premier League title.

He does have to balance that with one eye on the Champions League tie coming up, but Arsenal have plenty of depth and the team are doing just enough to win football matches right now.

Everton are well rested having travelled abroad for warm weather training rather than competitive football.

They have not played at a time when Arsenal have played three times and that could be a potential factor with David Moyes likely to have his team organised from set pieces and playing with discipline defensively. It was certainly the case when the teams met on the banks of the Mersey in December and only a Penalty separated them in what was a competitive, well fought fixture.

More of the same has to be expected on Saturday afternoon, but Arsenal do have enough quality in the final third to believe they will have the best of the chances.

It is unlikely that Arsenal will be as defensively porous as Newcastle United who allowed Everton to win at St James' Park, and the reality is that the home team will believe they can largely contain the visitors as long as they concentrate from set pieces.

That avenue was the undoing of Arsenal in Leverkusen, but they will be more aware of David Moyes and the approach he will take.

Everton's away record makes them dangerous, but they are not a team who have been creating loads of quality chances on their travels.

Noting that Everton have failed to score in 3 of the 4 away defeats suffered in the Premier League means the best approach here feels like backing Arsenal to do just enough and secure a win with a clean sheet of their own.

Arsenal have only produced a single clean sheet in the last 6 games played in all competitions, but they had 3 in a row at the Emirates Stadium before the 2-1 win over Chelsea. At the prices, it looks the best way to get behind the hosts who will want to place significant pressure on Manchester City before Pep Guardiola's men play in East London later in the evening.
