Liverpool
For the second time this season, Liverpool conceded very early on at Galatasaray and were unable to find an equaliser as they were beaten 1-0 in the Champions League. However, this time Liverpool will be hosting the Second Leg in that Last 16 tie and that makes this a very big week for the supporters, the players and for manager Arne Slot who remains under pressure.
Before turning the attention to the Champions League, Liverpool will be looking to improve their 6th placed standing in the Premier League as they continue to fight for a position that will take them back into the premier European competition for next season. With two of the three teams ahead of them facing one another earlier in the day, Liverpool have an opportunity to close the gap and take an 8-3-3 record at Anfield into this League fixture.
Liverpool have won 8 of the last 12 games in all competitions, but the momentum has not been as strong as they would have hoped considering there have been 4 losses scattered amongst those results. The side have won 4 of the last 5 games played at Anfield in all competitions with the exception being a 1-2 defeat to Manchester City.
Alisson picked up a knock that meant missing the trip to Istanbul on Tuesday and he is a doubt, while Federico Chiesa is hoping to have shifted an illness. Team selection is about balancing winning this fixture and also having one eye on the Champions League Last 16 Second Leg and so big decisions need to be made by the manager.
Tottenham Hotspur
Igor Tudor made a change in between the nets for the Champions League Last 16 First Leg on Tuesday and he came to regret that just 17 minutes later. The caretaker manager has been heavily criticised for not only taking off youngster Antonin Kinsky, who had made two big mistakes, but failing to acknowledge him as he trudged down the tunnel has frustrated fans and pundits alike.
It may not have been a big story if Tottenham Hotspur had not been thumped 5-2 at Atletico Madrid, but this is a team making headlines for all of the wrong reasons as they have slumped to a single point outside of the relegation zone in the Premier League. The manager has made little impact to turn things around and there is a chance that Spurs will be kicking off on Merseyside inside the bottom three if the two rivals below them have both won home games before this fixture is scheduled to be played.
Tottenham Hotspur have played four, lost four under Igor Tudor and they have continued to ship goals at an alarming rate with the team being 4-0 down inside 22 minutes on Tuesday. Those defeats make it 6 losses in a row in all competitions, and Spurs have lost their last 3 away games in all competitions during which time they have conceded 9 goals.
A huge amount of first team players continue to miss time for Tottenham Hotspur- adding to that is Micky van de Ven missing this fixture with a suspension. Worse still is that both Joao Palhinha and Cristian Romero are doubts having had concussion-like symptoms following the defeat in the Spanish capital.
Head to Head
Liverpool took advantage of an early Xavi Simons sending off and won 1-2 in North London in December.
They have not only beaten Spurs 4 times in a row at Anfield, but Liverpool have scored at least four goals in each of those wins.
Prediction
Every English Premier League club that played away from home in the Champions League underperformed this past week, but Tottenham Hotspur's early capitulation might have been the low point alongside Manchester City's defeat in the Spanish capital.
Igor Tudor is perhaps fortunate to be taking charge of this fixture with the team looking like they are not listening to anything being said.
His decision to withdraw young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky after 17 minutes in the Champions League Last 16 has gone down like a lead balloon and many felt Tudor may have been removed as manager immediately following the 5-2 loss at Atletico Madrid.
For now he remains in charge, but Igor Tudor has a huge task in front of him.
Tottenham Hotspur's squad is ravaged and he is without Micky van de Ven for this fixture.
If both Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha have to sit out, this could be another sore afternoon for Tottenham Hotspur fans and they have not exactly been defensively sound in recent visits to Anfield. That is not going to bode well for a team that have been conceding goals for fun since Igor Tudor came in to take over from Thomas Frank and even this inconsistent Liverpool team have to be confident of taking advantage.
A 1-0 loss in Istanbul will have stung, but Liverpool are still favourites to progress against Galatasaray when hosting them next week.
Arne Slot is still under pressure, but his team have won 4 of the last 5 games played at Anfield in all competitions and beat West Ham United 5-2 in a clinical display. The balance is still not right with teams able to create very good opportunities against this Liverpool defence, but everything here points to what is likely going to be a relatively comfortable home win.
If Liverpool score early, they are going to be in a position to score at least four goals for a fifth home game against Tottenham Hotspur in succession.
Anything other than a Liverpool win by a couple of goals would be a surprise unless the home team take the foot off the gas as Atletico Madrid did when facing Tottenham Hotspur. That is potentially in play with Liverpool likely resting players if they have a strong lead, but The Reds should have far too much for this Spurs team lacking confidence, leaders and players right now.
