Brighton v Liverpool
Football: English Premier League

This game is live on TV

Brighton

Some of the Brighton board members will have watching the European action through envious eyes with the ambition of this football club to return to that level having sampled a taste of the Europa League under Roberto De Zerbi. That has built up some pressure on Fabian Hurzeler and the young manager will be looking for a strong conclusion to the season to push Brighton into the likely European spots in the Premier League.

At the moment Brighton are 12th in the Premier League table, but there are just 5 points between them and Brentford in the top seven and so they do have a realistic pathway into the European positions. Those could actually push down to 8th or potentially 9th, but for now The Seagulls have to concentrate on improving the 6-6-3 record at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton were beaten at Anfield in the FA Cup Fourth Round and that was the culmination of a run of 3 straight defeats, but they have bounced back impressively with 3 wins in the last 4 Premier League games played. The exception was an unfortunate 0-1 home defeat to Arsenal in a game where Brighton should have been awarded a Penalty, but the result does mean the side have won just 1 of the last 5 League games played in this part of the South Coast.

Kaoru Mitoma is a doubt, but the squad that won at Sunderland is available to the manager.

Liverpool

Only two English clubs were returning for the home Champions League Last 16 games with a realistic pathway to earn a spot in the Quarter Final of the competition and both moved through impressively. One of those was Liverpool who crushed Galatasaray 4-0 at Anfield on Wednesday and it was a performance that could have resulted in double the goals scored, although Arne Slot will now be expecting his players to produce that level for the remainder of the campaign.

It has not been a Premier League season to remember for Liverpool who have long lost their grip on the title that was won last season. Instead they are fighting to earn the right to return to the Champions League and The Reds moved into 5th place last weekend, despite dropping two points in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield. They will travel for this early Saturday kick off with a 6-3-6 away record and Liverpool have scored 22 goals and conceded 23 in those matches.

Liverpool have to be feeling pretty good after the big Champions League win, but they have not won the last 2 Premier League games after putting three wins in a row together to move into a position to attack the top four. Narrow away wins at Sunderland and Nottingham Forest gave Liverpool some momentum, but they have lost 2 of the last 3 away games played in all competitions.

Mo Salah looked close to his best on Wednesday night, but he asked to come off with a potential injury issue and has to be considered a doubt.

Head to Head

Liverpool have beaten Brighton twice at Anfield this season by a 2-0 and 3-0 scoreline.

Recent visits to the Amex Stadium have been more challenging and Liverpool have won 1 of the last 5 here in all competitions, while suffering 3 defeats.

Brighton are unbeaten in the last 3 home Premier League games against this opponent.

Prediction

Unsurprisingly the odds shortened on Liverpool to win this Premier League game after the crushing victory over Galatasaray in the Champions League, but it would be a mistake to get too carried away.

Arne Slot will be aware of that and he will be reminding his Liverpool players of their current Premier League position and the hard work that still has to be put on the field if they are going to achieve all of their goals.

Liverpool were fluent in attack on Wednesday, but that has not always been the case in recent weeks with the team creating what looks to be decent openings without showing the composure needed. They have been beaten at Wolves and Galatasaray in the last 3 away games played in all competitions and overlooking Brighton would be a huge mistake.

The winter months were challenging for Brighton, but they have won 3 of the last 4 Premier League games played and the exception was a narrow defeat to the League leaders in a game where the home team deserved more than they got. It was a fixture that frustrated the manager, but Fabian Hurzeler has to be pleased with the bounce back effort in the win at the Stadium of Light last weekend and a full week to prepare is a bonus.

Brighton have also enjoyed recent Liverpool visits to the Amex Stadium and they certainly look a big price here.

Avoiding defeat is likely, but Liverpool will cause problems going forward and instead it may pay to back a Brighton player to have a Shot on Target having been moved into a more attacking position.

Jack Hinshelwood has made nineteen starts for Brighton this season and has been moved into an attacking midfield role in recent weeks- he has a single goal this season, but that position change has seen him on the end of plenty of shooting opportunities for The Seagulls.

Last week he missed a really good chance to score at Sunderland, but he has found the target in three of the last four matches now and is a big price to do the same against Liverpool. The Champions have not allowed a lot of good scoring opportunities in recent weeks, but they are vulnerable when teams get forward and the Brighton style should see Hinshelwood on the end of at least a couple of good shooting positions to test the goalkeeper.

If he does not start, which would be a surprise, backing Brighton to avoid a defeat looks the best play at 1.68 with Cloudbet.
