Leeds United
Just when it looked like Daniel Farke and Leeds United were going to be in a position to pick up three vital points, things changed dramatically. A missed Penalty would have stung, but moments later Leeds United were reduced to ten men in the Premier League game at Selhurst Park and the players had to show real resolve to simply earn a point.
At the end of the day it may feel like two dropped on a weekend when all of the other relegation rivals picked up draws as well and that has put some pressure on Leeds United to keep ticking the points over. Before a ball had been kicked this season, home form felt like it would be critical for Leeds United to avoid the drop and they have a 6-4-5 record at Elland Road, while remaining 3 points clear of the bottom three.
Leeds United have progressed to the FA Cup Quarter Final to be played on Easter Weekend, but they have not won any of the last 5 Premier League games after the goalless draw at Crystal Palace last Sunday. The side beat Norwich City in the FA Cup Fifth Round at Elland Road, but have lost 3 of the last 4 Premier League games here, including consecutive 0-1 defeats to Manchester City and Sunderland.
Gabriel Gudmundsson was dismissed for two bookings last weekend and will serve a suspension.
Brentford
There has to have been some real frustration in training over the last few days for the Brentford players after blowing a 2-0 lead over bottom club Wolves on Monday night. Earning a spot in any European competition would still be a big achievement for Keith Andrews and this Brentford squad, but some fans will have been dreaming about the Champions League and those dropped points sting.
Last weekend Aston Villa, Liverpool and Chelsea all failed to win, but Brentford remain in 7th place in the Premier League table and 6 points behind 4th placed Villa following the draw with Wolves. The Bees have a 6-1-8 away record in the Premier League and have scored 20 goals and conceded 25 in those matches.
Brentford have won 1 of the last 5 games in all competitions and that relatively poor run has seen them fail to close on the teams above them in the Premier League and also exit the FA Cup in the Fifth Round. They had won 4 away games in a row before a fortunate goalless draw at Bournemouth in the Premier League and a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium in the FA Cup in a fixture that ultimately ended in defeat on Penalties.
Mikkel Damsgaard is a doubt, while the likes of Vitaly Janelt, Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry are hoping to return after the March international break.
Head to Head
Brentford and Leeds United played out a 1-1 draw at the Gtech Community Stadium in December.
Leeds United are unbeaten in 7 when hosting Brentford, but 3 of the last 4 here have ended in draws.
Prediction
Both of these teams played out frustrating draws last weekend and Daniel Farke and Keith Andrews will share a point of view that their respective Leeds United and Brentford teams deserved so much more.
Last weekend may have been a missed opportunity for Leeds United, but this is a big game for the team back in front of the home fans.
The two teams between Leeds United and the bottom three are facing one another on Sunday and so this will feel like a chance for Leeds United to put some distance between at least one of Tottenham Hotspur or Nottingham Forest.
However, the last couple of League games here have ended in disappointing defeat as Leeds United have struggled to put a finishing touch to some of the football being played. Wastefulness cost them in the goalless draw at Selhurst Park when Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed a first half Penalty, but Daniel Farke has to believe that some of the fine margins will end up working in favour of his team if performance levels are maintained.
Leeds United were crushed by Arsenal here in January, but they played well enough to deserve points in the narrow defeats to Manchester City and Sunderland. The home team can certainly get forward with confidence in this one against a Brentford team who have just hit a slump in form and who have been giving up some big chances at the back.
They will have to be careful though and that is because they are facing a Brentford team who have certainly shown enough in the final third to think they can cause problems for Leeds United.
Keith Andrews' team have had to settle for a couple of away draws in consecutive games in regulation time, but they had won 4 in a row on their travels prior to those results at Bournemouth and West Ham United. They showed in a match at Turf Moor both sides of their game with strong attacking play coupled with some poor defensive situations and that was the case in the 2-2 draw against Wolves last Monday.
Scoring first is going to be important for both teams who are desperate for the three points for different reasons.
If that is produced in the first half, this fixture could really open up into a fun game for the neutral and it feels like it could end up 2-1 either way.
When they met in West London, the game ended up 1-1 and that is the score that perhaps is the most dangerous against the selection.
However, you have to believe that there is enough motivation to chase the three points and that should mean the managers keep the attacking options on the pitch for as long as possible.
A game under the lights at Elland Road should be played in a feverish atmosphere and backing at least three goals to be shared out looks the right approach to take in what is a good looking game on paper.
