Köln have already shown both sides of their game this season. They opened with a 3-2 home win over TSG Hoffenheim, but were beaten 4-1 by VfB Stuttgart last weekend, leaving them with five goals scored and six conceded after two rounds.
Said El Mala and Thijs Dallinga, who both scored against TSG Hoffenheim in the first round, have returned to training after missing the VfB Stuttgart defeat through illness.
The home tradition also heavily favors Köln in this match. Köln have 30 Bundesliga home wins against Werder Bremen. They have scored 110 goals in those meetings, and their 22 clean sheets against Werder Bremen are also their best home figures against any Bundesliga opponent.

Werder Bremen responded well to their 4-1 away defeat at SC Freiburg by beating RB Leipzig 3-1 at home last weekend. That result showed why writing them off after the opening game would be premature, particularly with their attack producing three goals against one of the Bundesliga’s stronger sides.
However, Werder Bremen have been struggling at away stadiums for some time now. They won only 3 of 17 away matches last season, compared to 9 away wins in the season before.
The squad is still dealing with several absences. Jens Stage and Justin Njinmah remain out with thigh injuries, Keke Topp is recovering from an ACL tear, while Felix Agu is only partially back in training. Mitchell Weiser, however, has returned to full training, which gives coach Daniel Thioune another option at full-back.
The Betting Verdict
Köln have home advantage and an excellent record against Werder Bremen at this ground, but both sides have already shown they can score freely and neither defense looked especially reliable to me so far.
The recent head-to-head is also much closer than the long-term home record: Köln won this fixture 3-1 in April, but Werder Bremen had avoided defeat in the previous four Bundesliga meetings.
Goals are my preferred bet, with both teams to score as a main bet. Over 2.5 goals is also possible, as I see this game ending something like 2-2.
