2009-09-20 - New England Patriots at New York Jets
A Sports Betting Pick by FirstDown
Preview
The New York Jets hired Rex Ryan as their new Head Coach in the off season and he came in and caused a storm with comments regarding Bill Belichick, the Head Coach of the New England Patriots. Now the time for talking will stop as the prepare to meet.
The Jets won their match last week in Houston against the Texans in one of the surprises of Week 1. Their new QB, Mark Sanchez, played well considering it was his first start in the NFL, but this is going to be a whole different test for the rookie.
New York finished 3rd in a tight AFC East last season with their 9-7 record but they were in control of the division for a long period before Brett Favre fell apart. They were 5-3 at home and 7-5 against sides in the AFC.
New York have not won their opening 2 games of a season since 2004. They are 4-10 against the spread in week 2 of the season in their last 14.
New England welcomed back Tom Brady last week, and the Quarter Back left it late to overcome Buffalo and lead his team to a 25-24 win over a divisional rival. It is always tough to start the season with 2 divisional rivals, especially on a short week, but there is also a feeling that Brady may have removed the cobwebs and is ready to take it to teams again.
The Patriots missed out on the playoffs last season even though they finished with the same 11-5 record that the reigning AFC East winners had at the end of the season. New England were 6-2 on the road last season and also had a 7-5 record against other sides in the AFC.
New England have a strong 36-15-1 record against the spread in their last 52 road games.
Head to Head
New England have a strong record against the Jets in recent meetings, winning 8 of the last 10 matches. They have won their last 5 road games against New York.
New England are 9-3-1 against the spread in their last 13 meetings.
Prediction
The New York Jets are a project in progress as they bed in their new QB although they have a lot of good talent there. This is going to be a real test of what they are capable of for the rest of the season.
New England will look to take control of this division by handing out another defeat to one of their rivals. They have so many options in their offense that I cannot see teams keeping up, especially if Brady plays as he did in the 4th Quarter last week.
I didnt think the handicap would be set as low as it is this week for New England and think it is possible that they may make that look like a silly line at the end of the match. I fully expect them to cover, I just hope these are not famous last words.
