Analysis:For the fifth time in a row these two teams will meet as they do battle for the 2008/2009 quarter-finals in the Champions League. Since 2004/2005 these two English rivals have clashed in the Champions League in every campaign.
Of those, three of the always-closely-fought ties coming in the semi-finals, while 2005/06 saw the sides meet in the group stages.But Liverpool have the upperhand from previous meetings recording two semi-final victories to Chelsea's one, while the two matches in Group G ended in draws.
Last season Chelsea progressed to the final after home advantage proved decisive and they sent the Reds packing. Interestingly, it has to be noted that the side who plays in front of their own supporters in the opening meeting has gone on to lose the tie in the three semi-final clashes and, despite this season's encounter arriving a round earlier, Liverpool will be extra cautious here.
It must also be noted that Rafa Benitez has what it takes when it comes to European football and the Spaniard is confident that Captain Steven Gerrard holds the key to this match.
But don't discount Guus Hiddink as he is a legend after winning the cup on penalties with PSV Eindhoven in 1988. Hiddink was brough in to win the Champions League after replacing the sacked Luiz Felipe Scolari in February.
Hiddink will be glad that Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano is suspended but will not be pleased that Gerrard has been passed fit and will start this match.
Steven Gerard will start this match partnering Fernando Torres upfront. Chelsea will bring on striker Didier Drogba and if he can repeat his performances produced in last season's semi-final second leg at Stamford Bridge, which came after personal criticism from Benitez then Liverpool will be in trouble. However, Chelsea will not have Portugal full-back Jose Bosingwa as he failed to recover from a hamstring injury after International duty.
