Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich can win the Bundesliga title this weekend at home if they win against Mainz and Bayer Leverkusen fails to beat Augsburg.
If not, they will win it next week away at RB Leipzig, which might be even sweeter as they will celebrate in a place and team they do not like much.
Anyhow, Bayern Munich responded fantastically after losing the title to Bayer Leverkusen last season. They are the most consistent team, much stronger than last season, losing just twice in their 30 Bundesliga games.
The Bavarians extended their unbeaten Bundesliga run to five games last week, easily hammering Heidenheim 0-4 away without even sweating in that game. That was their seventh game from the last eight, in which they scored at least twice, and their seventh game from the last eight, which ended with 3+ goals.
The so-called “Harry Kane title curse” is about to finally end. We can imagine he will be delighted to finally be crowned as a champion with Bayern Munich. It might not happen this weekend, but next week surely. On top of that, he will be the best goalscorer in the Bundesliga, so there are many reasons for celebration.
Thomas Muller will also be delighted this weekend, as he is about to play his 500th Bundesliga match! Only 12 other players in Germany have achieved such a feat, so I am sure his team will do everything to win this game and give him another good reason to remember this milestone match.
Mainz
Mainz is about to ruin everything they worked hard for this season. They were within a millimeter of playing in the Champions League next season, but it is not going to happen. Not because they have no chance, they do, but because they have been terrible in recent weeks.
Mainz are winless in five Bundesliga games, drawing three times and losing twice. That winless series will now stretch to six winless games as there is no way they avoid defeat in Munich this weekend.
Last week, Mainz led 2-1 against Wolfsburg for most of the game, yet they conceded in the last minute of the game for a 2-2 draw. That draw dropped them to sixth spot, two points behind fourth place, but now they have two games where they are massive underdogs — Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt.
The Betting Verdict
Mainz has been a somewhat bogey team to Bayern Munich in recent seasons. They are the only German team that has won against Bayern Munich four times in the past five seasons, and they also beat them this season in their first game, 2-1, in mid-December.
Now Bayern Munich is in much better form, full of confidence, and will go hard to win this game. A victory may bring them the title this weekend, so expect a motivated performance from them.
Mainz is in poor recent shape and has lost their last two away games in the Bundesliga, so back Bayern Munich to win in combination with at least three goals scored.
